I'd vote for Symphony X, the new album was really awesome.
Vocals, James La'Brie (Dream Theater) has a bad voice (imo), I don't like it at all, theoretically James is good, he can take high tones etc. etc. But to me, he has no power coming out. Russel Allan (Symphony X) has a really strong voice and can also take high notes and combines both options really great, an example would be the Walls of Babylon from the Paradise Lost CD where he goes up in a pretty strong and high vocal attitude. He rocks (imo). Guitars, John Petrucci (Dream Theater) is a really fast and great guitar player, I couldn't say anything bad about him, he does his solo's really great, an example of this would be the solo in In the Name of God, it's like a big part of the song, the solo's really great. Michael Romeo (Symphony X) is also really great, to be honest I think he's better than Petrucci, he has better tapping, that's a fact. Maybe not that fast and advanced but I think he's greater. Keyboards, Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) is an extremely good keyboard / piano player. To be honest, if you could compare all members of both bands this would be the best musician of them all. He's extremely fast and plays everything so good, he probably lifted up Dream Theater and made them who they actually are. Michael Pinella (Symphony X) is also very talented, an example of his work is the song Paradise Lost, the intro is fantastic and the song itself is also fantastic. He does very nice solos too and I can't really complain about him. Bass, John Myung (Dream Theater) is very technical, I'm not very good judging bassists but I can't say anything bad about Myung, he's a little behind the band, but he's good indeed. Michael Lepond (Symphony X) is also very technical, as I said before I'm not the person to judge bassists but this guy makes some nice solos. Drums, Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) is classified as one of the best drummers in this genre and I can't disagree, I love this drummer, he's so great, technical and good in every area you need to be in the drums. He's extreme! Jason Rullo (Symphony X) is also a very good drummer, very fast and has a great and wide knowledge how to use the drums. Dream Theater - Symphony X Vocals (1+ to Symphony X) Guitars (1+ to Symphony X) Keyboards (1+ to Dream Theater) Bass (0 to Both) Drums (1+ to Dream Theater) 2 / 2 So theoretically I'd say they're as good, but I'll give Symphony X some extra points for their songs. For example, Of Sins and Shadows has both the heavy metal riffs combining with the opera-kind of song (amazing) which comes in later in the song. Sea of Lies is very heavy but I'd give this one a point lesser than the others because of missing the fully potential, but then adding half a point cause of the amazing solos. Out of the Ashes has a very technical and amazing intro continued with a heavy riff and amazing song and after the verse has finished the opera-type of song and instruments evolves to an amazing chorus. The Accolade is a very nice song, it's quite slower and lesser metal but still has that little extra, it starts pretty cool and then gets a little slow but then you just wake up and realize what a good song this is. Pharaoh is also nice with a heavy intro but it seems that their fantasy of making songs quite looses up a bit here, pretty weird verse but very good chorus. The Eyes of Medusa is pretty much just metal, missing much other good things alike from the other songs but still quite has good parts in it. The Witching Hour is an incredible song, introduces a very fast and technical riff, first time you hear the song that comes in, it seems pretty weird but it's kind of awesome if you really listen to it. The chorus is really awesome too. The Divine Wings of Tragedy is very long song and has its awesome parts and its lesser good parts. Candlelight Fantasia is pretty calm and I can't really find the real passion in it, but it's good, indeed. Pull Me Under is a good song indeed but the chorus isn't as high class as the other parts (imo), I can't really get a top feeling about this song. Another Day starts pretty slow and continues being slow pretty far into the song but at about 2 minutes of the song the vocalist take a higher level of tunes and it starts to get really good. Take The Time starts of very nice and after a couple of seconds the real deal starts and then suddenly it gets slower and the song is, tbh, much better in this song, it's more powerful. The chorus is also awesome, this is an awesome song, tbh. Surrounded starts kind of slow but still nice and then when it really starts it goes pretty cool with all instruments, like a soft song. It's pretty good and keeps going soft. Metropolis starts with a combined riff / keyboard riff which evolves to the same riff with heavier drums, the keyboard really makes this song awesome. The song is quite good in this song too. As a song this is a really good one. Under A Glass Moon is one of the best made by DT (imo), it has really nice combination with the double pedals, the chorus is very amusing too, indeed. The song was pretty nice in this one too but could've had a little more power. Wait For Sleep is really nice, it's calm and pretty much the same all the way through but has something extra, the song creates a nice melody. Learning to Live has some awesome parts, but some a pretty weird, the best part with the song is when the vocalist goes like ouh oouh oooouh with higher and higher tones starting at like 7:00 (imo). Oculus Ex Inferni, i was unsure of counting this since it's just an intro song but it's a song so ... this one drawn the album points. Set the World on Fire is a really heavy song with awesome chorus, half a point was taken 'cause I think they could've added some various other things. Domination is really an awesome song with an awesome riff and chorus, the verse could've used a little lighter and higher song (imo), but else it's just great. The Serpent's Kiss is totally awesome, it begins heavy and then continues to a lower volumed voice which evolves to a high song and pretty much awesome the whole way, it's awesome! Paradise Lost is the best (imo), it isn't heavy at all but it's nice like hell, it begins with the weird beat (13/8) and it's just totally awesome all the way. Eve of Seduction, nothing to complain about, medium heavy and extremely nice riff, awesome! Walls of Babylon has awesome riffs, a lot of them too, the high tones in the chorus is also very powerful making them awesome! Seven has a very fast introduction, very technical the whole song tbh. Keeps on just being awesome, I wasn't sure which was the best between this and Domination but it came to this since the dark song ruins a little in Domination. The Sacrifice is kind of slow, like PL but not as good, pretty rough song which still fits, it's one of the lesser good but still good. Revelation is kind of a solo song, awesome though, can't really complain about it. Could add some more 'awesomeness' haha well, it rocks! As I Am is a heavy awesome song, can't say more about it. The Dying Soul seems a little Egyptian inspired, nice though, heavy and kind of nice. Endless Sacrifice is a heavy song with nice soft intro evolved to a very heavy chorus and nice more powerful (than normal) song. Very heavy intro, almost to heavy pretty weird beat in this one, but it's a little to much. Still nice! Vacant is slow and nice. Not very nice but kind of nice. Steam of Consciousness is pretty nice, heavy like the others but I can't really find the awesomeness in this one. In the Name of God is a really awesome song, it's heavy like hell and after 8 minutes the solo begins, really unique, very technical and awesome bass and drums there too. Awesome song. Of Sins and Shadows (10/10) Sea of Lies (9.5/10) Out of the Ashes (10/10) Accolade (9/10) Pharaoh (7/10) The Eyes of Medusa (7/10) The Witching Hour (9/10) The Divine Wings of Tragedy (7/10) Candlelight Fantasia (6/10) Total: 74,5/90 (8/10, to be accurate 8,27/10) Pull Me Under (8/10) Another Day (8/10) Take The Time (9.5/10) Surrounded (7/10) Metropolis (9/10) Under A Glass Moon (9.5/10) Wait For Sleep (7/10) Learning to Live (8/10) Total: 66/80 (8/10, to be accurate 8,25/10) Oculus Ex Inferni (6/10) Set the World on Fire (9.5/10) Domination (9.5/10) The Serpent's Kiss (9.5/10) Paradise Lost (10/10) Eve of Seduction (10/10) The Walls of Babylon (10/10) Seven (10/10) The Sacrifice (7/10) Revelation (Divius Pennae ex Tragoedia) (9/10) Total: 90,5/100 (9/10, to be accurate 9,05/10) As I Am (9/10) Dying Soul (7/10) Endless Sacrifice (9/10) Honor Thy Father (7/10) Vacant (6/10) Steam Of Consciousness (6/10) In The Name Of God (10/10) Total: 54/70 (8/10, to be accurate 7,71/10) These are just my thoughts, but to me Symphony X is quite better, though both are extremely good. |

I listen to both bands pretty heavily. I'll have to go with Dream Theater.
I will admit, though, that James Labrie is absolutely terrible live and I regret buying DT's new concert DVD. In the short time I've spent browsing these forums, though, it seems DT fans have really made a bad rap for themselves, there's so much hate! Maybe I should have picked Symphony X. |

Those who just say that they're horrible and boring, doesn't understand the music, it's like jazz, dream theater are inspired by a lot of jazz, and to a normal person that's just a bunch of random tones but if you do understand it you can see the harmonies and the melody through the tones
instead of just saying that they suck, evolve your answer and say why, else it's just unnecessary to post |
