Meshuggah!

Please pardon me if there is already a thread on this fantastic, fantastic band (I did use the search function).

Allmusic:
Quote:

Offering a complex form of metal that combined the sweeping adverturism of math rock, the oddball tempos of experimental jazz, and the stunning brutality of thrash metal, Meshuggah raised the bar for metal bands everywhere upon their debut.

Meshuggah, whose name is taken from the Hebrew and Yiddish word for “crazy,” are a five-piece technical metal band from Umeå, Sweden, founded in 1987. Their style is most easily described as extreme/technical metal with some jazz influence. They use extended polymetric passages, complex drum patterns, angular, dissonant guitar riffs, and harsh vocals. Their lineup has always been consistent, apart from bass which has been handled by many people since the band’s conception. Their current lineup consists of Jens Kidman (vocals), Fredrik Thordendal (lead/rhythm guitar + backup vocals), Marten Hagström (rhythm guitar + backup vocals), **** Lövgren (bass) and Tomas Haake (drums).

Meshuggah is widely acknowledged as an influence on many modern metal bands from Textures to Tool. They are regarded as pioneers by critics and musicians alike.
I have heard nothing but good things about this band and obZen is one of my favorite records this year. They've gone great lengths to make some fantastic records, and I'm anxious to see them when they come stateside.

Anyone else like them?

The Unfan 11-02-2008 06:46 PM

They're pretty good, if not over hyped by the metal community.

lucifer_sam 11-02-2008 06:47 PM

I'm not part of the metal community.

And it seemed like they got good reviews across the board.

The Unfan 11-02-2008 06:48 PM

Really? I know a few proggies who absolutely hate them, though proggies hate everything.

lucifer_sam 11-02-2008 06:55 PM

It's quite possible, but I still enjoy them.

Allmusic didn't rate a single album of theirs under four stars, and they're usually a pretty good index of impartiality.

Embracethedeath 11-02-2008 07:49 PM

Yeah, inside metal circles Meshuggah can be pretty hated on. Actually, they're usually frowned upon by metal elitists. I'm really apathetic towards them. Never picked up obZen but i might in a while

lucifer_sam 11-02-2008 09:21 PM

Sounds like a bunch of self-righteous pricks.

Who knew metalheads could be close-minded?

Comus 11-02-2008 10:02 PM

I'm a dedicated proggy and I very much approve of Meshuggah, well their last album anyways was especially brilliant. Infact I'm gonna stick it on now and do som uni work.

And that's precisely one thing i hate about the metal community. Any band that gains even a little bit of recognition is immediately frowned upon. What's this "underground" status that many metalheads like to have?!(Not directed at you, just a few I've come across)

Anyways, Chaosphere is my favorite release, followed by Destroy Erase Improve and obZen. It can be tiring after listening to one of their albums, but that's what i like about them ;)

I quite like Meshuggah and Destroy Erase Improve is my fav. I have good memories of rocking out to Catch 33 with my flatmates during car trips around Auckland.

I didn't have enough money to see them when they came to Auckland recently, but 2 of my flatmates went and loved it.
