This is somewhat out of context, but what is the best songs/album to listen to by ATDI. I listened to De-Loused to death in highschool and love it, but I have only ever heard a few ATDI tunes.

ATDI, without a doubt.

The Mars Volta is great, but it seems a bit like they're trying too hard. For example, the random 6 minute ambient break in Cicatriz. It's completely unnecessary (and ruins the song IMO) and it seems like they put it in there to look "super weird and progressive".

See for me ATDI is generally harder than my tastes usually go for but the progressive elements of TMV really drew me in and got me to fall in love with the band.

Volta

I think that The Mars Volta seems more evolved maybe seems that Cedric and Omar may have felt held back a little in their old band....Both are good Volta is great....the guitars and vocals mesh together almost as one intense voice...I enjoy the Mars Volta greatly.

Yeah I also like the ambient bit.

Anyway I voted Mars Volta. Although I like both bands I definitely prefer to listen to The Mars Volta.

FaSho 11-19-2008 07:03 AM

I have a newfond love for In/Casino/Out, because of the track 'For Now...We Toast'.

Alfred 11-25-2008 02:43 PM

In/Casino/Out is amazing too. Too many people only like Relationship Of Command.

"Napoleon Solo", "Lopsided" and "Hourglass" are the best songs from that album, IMO.

Laces Out Dan! 11-25-2008 06:43 PM

Vaya is my favourite ATDI album.

Fruitonica 11-25-2008 08:12 PM

The Mars Volta. I think maybe ATDI are a slightly more efficient band and do more with less, but TMV throw so much in, and even if it doesn't all stick it's much more interesting.

Definitely. The ambient section just drags on too long, it would have had a much stronger impact if they'd kept it down to about 2 minutes. Though, when the guitars do kick back in it's a big pay off.

The overuse of quiet ambience is what makes Frances my least favourite TMV album, although I haven't downloaded Amputechture.

ins0mniac 11-25-2008 10:33 PM

Relationship of Command is the best album between the two but overall I prefer TMVs amazing consistency of their album's quality.

FaSho 11-26-2008 08:07 AM

In/Casino/Out is so much better then ROC, ROC just has more stand out tracks that hook you immeadiatley, while ICO takes a few listens to really get into.

Mister Sad Soul 11-26-2008 08:50 AM

I honestly had trouble picking one or the other, they're both great in their own ways...just depends what mood im in...

I ended up picking TMV just because I have seen them live quite a few times and it is usually one of the better live shows I get to witness. Never had the chance to see ATD so while it might unbalanced, it is what it is.

I also think De-Loused was one of the better put together albums that anyone had done in a long time. Just an amazing job.

I agree to this, but I still like ROC more.

Pornographie Nouveau 11-27-2008 12:08 PM

That's a hard one. I like them both equally actually.

agree with that totally. out of the two id have to go for ATDI, with my favorite album being ICO. love TMV but for me, not up to the standard of ATDI yet.

Rockafella 12-05-2008 06:00 PM

ATDI. I can't listen to Mars Volta. I have their newest CD still in the wrapper.

"For God's sake Robert" 12-06-2008 02:28 AM

mars volta, I'd say. I just find them more interesting. but thats just me

also, check out Omar Rodriguez's solo ****, with a eyar hes made liek 6 full albums that are all mindblowing

Comus 12-06-2008 05:28 AM

Most of which were recorded years ago..

pianokeys 12-09-2008 05:48 PM

At the Drive-In irritate me, so I'd say Mars Volta.

boo boo 04-15-2009 08:09 PM

TMV

Though I like some At The Drive In too.

ChiliColdBlood 04-16-2009 12:16 PM

I voted for ATDI, but I'm already reconsidering my choice. **** it, they're both good.

khfreek 04-16-2009 03:04 PM

At the Drive-In, definitely.

soothsayer 04-17-2009 11:15 AM

At the Drive-In and TMV are great bands, but before Relationship of Command ATDI weren't nearly as good. TMV has been consistently amazing through all of their albums, so i vote TMV.

I've listened to Relationship of Command more than any TMV album though, but at the same time, in general i listen to TMV more...

I guess it's just a matter of whether you enjoy hardcore or prog more...and I like prog more so that's my vote.

Twilight_Wish 05-07-2009 02:51 PM

I'm listening to At The Drive In at the moment and I have to say there far easier to listen to the The Mars Volta. The Mars Volta are good too but alot of their songs just go on and on.

Well, I think that In/Casino/Out is an amazing album in its own way and they had some pretty cool songs in their early days.

But yes, you're right. Relationship Of Command feels like the album that they were destined to make, same thing with Refused and The Shape Of Punk To Come.

RVCA 01-31-2011 08:52 PM

I voted Mars Volta. I really like both, but De-Loused, Frances, and Bedlam are excellent. Amputechture is great too.

DoctorSoft 02-07-2011 10:06 PM

I voted ATDI. Mars Volta have been more consistent throughout their career, but ROC is one of my favourite albums of all time, I think I've listened too it over 100 times, never gets old.

Phantom Limb 02-09-2011 02:27 PM

Mars Volta hands down. Amputechture>everything else.

duga 02-10-2011 08:10 AM

My band decided to do a cover of Roulette Dares. I can't tell you how fun that song is to play. When everyone clicks together...oh man, there is just so much energy.

I guess to answer the thread's question I prefer the Mars Volta. I only got into At the Drive In because of the Mars Volta, honestly. Deloused pretty much changed my life.

On a side note, I always found the differences between Sparta and the Mars Volta to be really interesting. It really does feel like an even split of talents from ATDI. The experimental progressive side went into TMV while the raw energy side went to Sparta. Listening to ATDI now, I can clearly pick out who probably came up with what part.

Howard the Duck 02-12-2011 10:59 AM

At the Drive-In

clutnuckle 02-12-2011 08:32 PM

Not too keen on either, but Frances the Mute is an amazing album that truly never gets its due. Even though I hate a lot of their other stuff, I must give them the victory here.

bantermusic_uk 06-27-2011 01:01 PM

depends how much drugs you've taken!

At The Drive In has gotten back together. Also, it is rumored that Refused is reforming as well, and both will playing music festivals this year

Zer0 01-09-2012 02:45 PM

Sweeeeeeeeeet. Well they did say they were on an "indefinite hiatus" afterall. A new album would be nice as well but it's hard to see them top Relationship Of Command.

Automaticchaos 01-09-2012 05:09 PM

At the drive in for me. Relationship of Command is an amazing album

14232949 01-09-2012 05:10 PM

If At The Drive-In are doing T in The Park, I'll go back against everything I've said about that shoddy festival and book tickets.

Would be an incredible act to see live, however I get the feeling they wouldn't fit in with the vibe of ****e at TiTP.

RVCA 01-09-2012 07:27 PM

I'm really excited because two of my favorite hardcore bands have reformed, but on the other hand it seems like they might not play any local shows at smaller venues that they would headline. Festivals kinda suck, and I don't want spend 500 dollars to see Refused and ATDI play for 30 minutes each

duga 01-10-2012 06:43 PM

ATDI are playing Coachella this year...this might be one reason to shell out the unbelievable amount of cash it takes to go.

And Refused will be there, too, so yeah...
