I have never classed Maiden as Power Metal personally. Their songs have primarily been based around prog time signatures and motifs.

Iron Maiden is not power metal.

I'd say they were a huge influence on it though, with the soaring clean vocals, the epic feel, the lyrical matter, the upbeat galloping feel and the riff style etc.

The galloping feel was taken wholesale from Zep's ACHILLES LAST STAND. Harris has admitted as such. Most definitely they can be seen as an archetype Power Metal band but I would never class them as one.

I think POWER METAL it self is almost a distillation of all the various rock and (few) metal genres that were around in the early 80's to arrive at a "pure" metal destination wherein the bands were playing music that was NEVER influenced by anything else (or so they thought). EG Manowar. I know that does'nt seem to make much sense but I would regard JUDAS PRIEST to be far more of an influence on Power Metal than Maiden as they embodied more characteristics per se of the genre musically and stylistically.

BTW I'm not disagreeing with your post Seltzer, it is a salient point.

I suppose Dio could be considered a decent influence on power metal too.

Now there I would agree. They were more bombastic and actually KNOWING of what they were aiming for. If we judge Maiden solely on Bruce ****insons arrival, then I agree that the power metal tag is virtually a given BUT their first two albums are a different kettle of fish. Di'anno was virtually a Punk vocalist. The production is raw and the whole feel of the album feels less classically defined as an atypical Metal sound. Themes were definitely emerging from Harris's songwriting, but these two albums alone lead me to my opinion of Maidens non power status lol.

Haha, and that's why Urban only likes their first two albums. But I agree on Di'Anno being a more punk styled vocalist. I like him, just not as much as Bruce.

Maiden (for better or worse) made me who I am today. The first band I actively got into. Bless them.

I don't actually mind the first few Dickinson albums. It's just from Powerslave onwards they seemed to get more & more polished & lose that edge that appealed to me.
