Celtic Frost-Dethroned Emperor
Admittedly they were'nt strictly a Thrash band. They did flirt with Black Metal, Avant-Garde and even Glam Metal in their time but this track is so simple in it's execution but so utterly effective. Great riffs and a drum beat that your mother could replicate. In all seriousness, 'Into The Pandemonium' from '87 was a very distinctive and experimental album for it's time and does'nt really recieve the credit it deserves. This is from that album. Who says that Metal isn't progressive?: |
^ Great album and EP!
Although To Mega Therion is an obvious favorite of mine(and one of the best metal albums ever), their follow up was almost equally good. Like the experimental nature of it. CF definitely had some of the most hard hitting riffs ever. Most of the 80s so called "Black metal" was either thrash/heavy metal with Black metal ideologies. You know, stuff like venom, mercyful fate, Bathory, Hell Hammer/Celtic Frost, Possessed etc. And is that a Sacred Reich EP? I haven't listened to it yet. Ignorance is a fine thrash album and The American Way wasn't all that bad either.(although some would prefer the latter) |
Surf Nicaragua the E.P is worth a few quid now:
Amazon.com: Surf Nicaragua: Sacred Reich: Music If you can't find it just holler ;) |
I have this on my IPod :D |
What the fuck were they thinking about? Cold Lake was a terrible album .Urban - 1 cool point :D
|
I don't understand the hate for it.
Mexican Radio off Into the Pandemonium was just as poppy but nobody whinges about that :p: |
Mexican Radio was crap too. It was a band trying to have fun but Tom G Warrior is far too intense for that. It just ended up being laughable. Although many people say that about their entire career. I still can't find 'Into The Pandemonium' anywhere. I used to have it on gatefold vinyl but I have never replaced it.

I had to go to Toronto to get my copy

Mortal Sin-Mayhemic Destruction
Although the Thrash scene seemed derivative, Australia's Mortal Sin were one of the few pure thrash bands to peddle a Metallica rip off but do it well. The riff @ 3.00 mins is legendary in Thrash circles and indeed their second album 'Face Of Despair' is a cult fave. It suffered due to Thrash's drop in popularity. |
The vocals are an acquired taste but the album 'Eternal Nightmare' was a riff fuelled classic:
|
Testament- The Haunting (1987)
The band that never quite made it. Testament's first three albums were killer. Full of chunky riffs and surprisingly at ease with melodic sections too. I was recently utterly distraught to watch them playing 'Burnt Offerings' recently at Wacken and Chuck (vocalist) was grunting and screaming and generally over-emphasising the vocal track as if he wants to appear hip and modern and more in line with what the kids want these days. Fuck that. Just play it like it's supposed to be played. BTW. Chuck needs to lose weight ;) |
Some nice stuff, but where's the Kreator man?
|
Kreator- Stream Of Consciousness (1989)
I saw them on this tour. Even though I was never a big fan, I thought this album had Kreator defining their sound and this track has an almost Punk Hardcore sound to it. One of Germany's best and most influential Thrash bands. |
That's better, wrong album, but much better :D
|
I can't even remember who was supporting them on this tour either. My poor brain :D
|
Haha, would most probably have been someone forgettable, a good thrash band comes but once in a single tour ;)
|
G? Gammacide.

This is the best thread I've seen on this site. Top marks! Ive posted thrash metal threads on other sites as it's a genre of music I've been looking broadening my horizons with. I like the big bands ike Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax etc and I like some Dark Angel, Possessed, Testament and a handful of other bands but I'm rather picky with thrash metal so thanks a lot I'm listening to some Coroner now :)

Sabbat-The Best Of Enemies (1989)
Arguably Britains best Thrash band. Sabbat took inspiration lyrically from Pagan folklore and their music genuinely did sound different to the generic Bay Area sound. The 'Dreamwaver' album from which this is taken from is very dense both lyrically and musically with Walkyiers vocals hugely dominating the sound. I went to see them live around this time and they were one of the best bands I have ever seen. |
I quite liked Sabbat, a friend of mine got me into them and gave me their first two albums, I dug them pretty hard, but then I did some looking around and obtained Mourning Has Broken... After that even the earlier albums no longer sounded as good. I realised why he only gave me the first two.
I should re-listen to the first two especially History but, eh who has the time nowadays, Especially when I'll be listening to music solely for my reviews for the next few weeks. Andy is a total legend though, some of his production work is great... some not such but still. |
A History Of A Time To Come has not held up well but Dreamweaver still sounds good.
|
Possessed-My Belief (1988)
I am going to diversify a little and introduce bands that deviated from the classic Thrash sound yet still were included in that genre at the time. Possessed are acknowledged as one of the first Death Metal bands. This was a lyrical conceit only for a while. The E.P 'The Eyes Of Horror' was adored by the Thrash fraternity. Possessed-My Belief (1988): |
Nuclear Assault-Brain Death (1986)
Nuclear Assault's sound took it's influences from American hardcore and Punk much more so than classic Metal templates yet they enjoyed the most success when affiliating themselves with the Thrash fraternity. I met John Connelly a couple of times and he came across as a sincere (albeit) small fella but Dan Lilker was a much more distant figure. Such a shame as his Bass sound and political motivations were behind a lot of what Nuclear Assault were about and indeed a side Project 'S.O.D'. This track was the last on their debut 'Game Over' and contains one of the best ever breakdowns (before they were recognised as an actual musical tool) in the genre. That, along with it's ambient build up equates to one of the finest examples of the genre you will hear. |

Am i missing something here?! Isn't it from the ep? Edit: Oh, just noticed you mentioned The Eyes of Horror. Was wondering why post a song alone :p: |
This is a great thread. Out of all the bands listed here, I recommend Blind Illusion the most. The Sane Asylum is a brilliant album
|
I like looking through this thread. 0ut of thrash, black, and death metal, i know the least about thrash. If i was gonna say one thing, it would be that Repugnant is a bitchin thrash/death band. New too.

Acid Reign-Goddess (1988) Acid Reign were great. I saw them many times live way back when. They were'nt the best musicians, their music was'nt of the highest standard yet they were damn fun both on the stage and off it. The production on their first E.P 'Moshkinstein' (of which this was taken) has an almost Punk vibe and eschewed the traditional speeded up Sabbath type of heaviness that was prevalent at the time. Anyhow, I can't see many people digging this but it's brought back a few memories for me: |
Love this thread. I saw Death Angel, Testament, and Nuclear Assault live in the 80s...at a tiny place called the Emerald City Ballroom in Wichita, Kansas. ahhhhhh sweet memories.
|
Voivod- Chaosmongers (1988) Probably the most musically competent band from the Thrash era and quite honestly one of the best guitar bands ever IMO. Just listen to those tempo changes and skew whiffed rhythms. Coming from Canada and being influenced by Psychedelia set them far apart from the many american bands at the time. Both Dimension Hatross (from which this is taken) and Nothing Face are superb albums and it is definitely time for a reappraisal. |
Voivod is the most under rated band EVER!!!
I'll never put my head around why they never got the attention they deserve |
A German band that seemed to up the speed in their music and ride on the tails of thrash. However there was enough in their riffs to warrant me buying the album at the time. Never the most technical band around instead relying on muscular riffs and bursts of speed. |
Affectionately refered to as 'Beer Metal' Germany's Tankard were a breath of fresh air as they didn't take themselves too seriously with lyrics about well, beer and giggles. They did play a kick ass brand of punky thrash speed metal that is just damn fun. both Chemical Invasion and The Morning After are great. |
Christ I forgot about this thread. I can't believe the awesome discussion I missed. :(
Deathrow were pretty good for their time (but definitely short-lived) , I had an LP a while ago but I must have lost it in the years since I stopped listening to thrash. The Tankard track is okay I guess, although the vocals are a little off-putting... On a separate note, jackhammer what would you think if I started an avant-garde metal thread? It's far and above my favorite sub-genre of metal and there's an extensive fellowship here of people that listen. And I know there's a number of people (including you) that have a good bit of knowledge poking around there. |

What a great thread! as a newcomer to Music Banter i missed this one when it started..but i think Jackhammer is spot on!
Some Top Thrash tracks: Exodus - Piranha Slayer - Angel of Death Artillery - Time has Come And many more, come on lets keep this thread going!:drummer: |
I'm a huge thrash fan, and I've been one since I was 16. My favorite bands are Artillery, Vio-Lence, Exodus, Overkill, Metallica, Megadeth, Bonded By Blood, Dark Angel, Kreator, and Metal Church. I had the honor oof seeing Kreaotr and Exodus live last Thursday. Probably one of the best shows I've been too.
