So just what IS "ROCK" in the main forum sense these days?! (indie, jazz)

For me, rock is a very broad term. It encompasses punk, pop, and indie. I'm not really sure why we have separate forums for punk, pop, and indie. I would just all list them as subforums of rock. This is just my opinion. I really don't think there is such a thing as just plain rock, there is always a style to describe the different types of rock.

Not really, R&B is just a specific style that no one does anymore, Urban Pop more accurately describes stuff like Rihanna, Mary J. Blige etc.

Urban is a style of r&b. But you are right, Rihanna and Mary J. Blige are urban artists.

Change my post to say Britney Spears or Ashlee Simpson, it doesn't change the fact they're not rock. I'm digressing. Point is pop isn't a sub-genre of rock. Indie isn't either.

Actually, Britney Spears and Ashlee Simpson are rock artists. Rihanna is r&b. Neither of them are pop, either. Ashlee Simpson is teen pop and pop/rock while Britney Spears is dance-pop, teen pop, and pop/rock. The kind of pop I'm talking about when I say pop is artists like The Association, Burt Bacharach, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and The Box Tops. That is pop. Indie is far too narrow to be it's own genre. And indie artists end up being rock artists anyways.

How are they rock? Also since when is teen pop a genre? And if it is how isn't it essentially pop? You seem pretty anal.

Indie is just a shortened version of independent. There's nothing rock about that whatsoever because there's no set sound to being independent.

Dance music is a style of rock music, the kind that Britney Spears and Ashlee Simpson make. Teen pop isn't a genre, it's a style of rock music. I figured the name teen pop would be pretty self-explanatory, but I guess not. Teen pop, is dance-pop, pop, and urban that is geared toward teens and often performed by teens as well. Pop is more broad, music based on memorable melodies, repeated sections, and tight, concise structures. About the indie comment, take a peak at our "Indie & Alternative Forum" and tell me how many of those bands are independent, unsigned acts. Not very many, if any, of them. The term indie is rarely every associated with independent anymore. It has come to accept a sound of it's own.
