Smart Adolescents listen to Heavy Metal

Metalheads are smart, according to a new study. I don't know how accurate this new study is though.

Predator 04-25-2008 06:38 PM

I'm not shocked at all.

Hunty 04-25-2008 06:47 PM

+1

I am not shocked at all....

jackhammer 04-25-2008 07:04 PM

You could say that any form of music that you engross yourself in will provide a juxtaposition in your life but as for being smarter? I'm not so sure but I definitely concur that anyone who looks behind the mainstream fodder and embraces it has an inquisitive mind.

Comus 04-25-2008 08:07 PM

I'm not surprised either, loads of geeks like black metal.

EDIT: "Mr Cadwallader then held an online discussion involving 19 members of the academy, 17 of whom were heavy metal fans. They spoke of listening to bands including System of a Down, Slipknot, Tool, Dragon Force, Forward Russia and In Flames when they were in a bad mood and using it to work off frustrations and anger."

I'm sorry, i thought they meant metal

Duke Of Slander 04-25-2008 08:32 PM

So when geeks get angry they listen to over rated Metal bands? Yeah I could see it.

Alfred 04-25-2008 08:32 PM

Slipknot is metal, just less aggressive, commercial metal. Dragonforce, well, lmao.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-25-2008 08:36 PM

You wouldn't think so looking at this forum where 9/10 of your average slipknot fans can post stuff like

The audience doesn't make the music. I actually listen to Slipknot a bit myself. I don't really care what everyone else thinks of a band. I just like their music.

A very diplomatic respectful answer, JH.

H:drummer:

Predator 04-25-2008 09:30 PM

Of course there are smart people that listen to all kinds of music.
I'm not shocked because I used hang out and listen to metal with the debate team and chess club in school. Bunch of dorks at school, but we did enjoy some pretty good music.

 I didn't finish reading the article.

mr dave 04-26-2008 08:32 AM

one thing that study neglects. getting good grades does not mean someone is smart; just that they know how to repeat the 'right' answer. i think the common link is social alienation rather than academic ability.

since when the **** is brian may or queen 'metal'?

SATCHMO 04-26-2008 10:20 AM

There was a point where heavy metal fans represented a demographic of people who's mere existence threatened to pollute the gene pool with future convenience store clerks and turn the oxygen we breathe into a precious commodity( See Judas Priest's lawsuit for further evidence of this), However the genre has become signifigantly more intelligent

Scary part is that is EXTREMELY close to the truth...lol.

Smart adolescents, or teens jaded and outcast in society?

Yeah. Have you listened to Slipknot? Sure, they're a sh1te band, but "less aggressive"? They're probably one of the most aggressive bands I've ever HEARD in ANY genre. WAY WAY more aggressive and furious than a lot of black metal I've been told to check out.

that's a great one and as awesome as that self titled disc is, i really think their 'disco volante' album is the pinnacle of that group's chaotic intensity, and a level of intensity a group like slipknot can only perpetually try to attain. the 'secret' song in the middle of the disc is gold hehe

i still like their 'california' album the best though.

ZOMGPWN3DLOL 05-05-2008 03:06 PM

all of my friends love metal, and we're a bunch of nerds :P

jackhammer 05-05-2008 03:21 PM

It's all that headbanging to those deaf leopard noise tracks init.

That's a bit judgmental isn't it? Abandoning yo' buddies just because there was something missing in the mental acumen......

Zer0 05-07-2008 03:13 AM

That is actually kinda true. One of my friends went to a school for talented youth (basically for brainiacs who found normal school too boring) and most of the people there were into metal.

Rainard Jalen 05-07-2008 05:55 AM

I know a PhD mathematician who tutors in maths, and the only thing he listens to is Dream Theatre...... sigh
