Metallica is good, but Dave Mustaine is just somebody I wanna hug for being so freaking great. I can seriously masturbate to every Megadeth song, can't with Metallica (unless it's Ride the Lightning, of course). Megadeth FTW!

Way back when, Metallica stood miles above Megadeth but over time I feel that Megadeth are infinitely more interesting to listen to. Except for Garage. Inc I never listen to any Metallica after MOP.

I think it's those early Metallica masterworks though that pretty much secure them as the best thrash band there ever was. Even if Megadeth matured better, Metallica were the virtually unrivaled grand masters.
Course they have long since digressed into total suck, as we all know too well... |

I still prefer Slayer to both of them! Metallica were and are very good at self promotion and Lars Ulrich even admitted that he wanted something akin to Iron Maiden in terms of merchandise tie ins. To me it lessened the impact of their music and what the genre was about. Listening back to their music it is quite apparent how unoriginal they were at times.
Of course the whole Thrash genre was one big melting pot of influences-Metal, Punk and Hardcore, but listening back to Metallica and you can hear a generic Heavy Metal band in disguise.

Makes you wonder how they would have turned out had Cliff Burton not died.
The impression I always got with him was he had quite a bit of influence in the band. I think things would have been very different had he still been around.
