I remember all of the press, and the build up to the release of the Black Album. Metallica made a drastic change with their music on that album. Some say it is the best album they produced "musically".
This thread is for people's opinions. Both of these bands have been huge influences for many bands that we see now. I imagine that alot of people are like me, in the fact that they like music from both bands, but have a preference of one over the other. |

Well, i'm hoping they will be going for a different sound, their new ensemble is good, Robert Trujillo is a much better bassist than Jason Newsted was.

But from what I've heard of Flotsam and Jetsam, Newsted seems like a pretty decent bassist.

Nah, Burton would be pushing it.
Newsted was decent, but compared to Burton, Trujillo and everyone else in the band, he was just the other guy, he had a good singing voice though, and he could exite a crowd at live shows... His bass playing is nothing special though, one problem i have with him is that he uses a pick, shame on him. |

/\ Agreed, RT is amazing, but Burton is Burton, they moved to get him into the band.

It sucks ass that Burton died.
The thing about metal... Is that there are so many great metal bassists, in other words not many, in metal bass more or less imitates the guitars, similar to the way it's done in most punk rock. IMO players who use picks have a much duller tone, and it limits their abillities to progress on the instrument.... Of course there are exceptions, Justin Chancelor is pretty good for a pick user. I got a bass on my b-day.... I have come to find that fingerpicking just has a much more natural feel to it... That's why most bassists prefer not to use picks, they just get in the way. |

I also agree. Robert is better than Jason Newsted, but Cliff was really brilliant. |
