Bands you would love if they had a different vocal style/vocalist

Time and time again I tell people my favourite band is Dream Theater and time and time again I have to defend James La Brie (who I love).

I was just wondering if there are other bands that people enjoy listening to but wince whenever the singing begins. For me it would have to be Opeth as I love their music but hate the death metal vocals

Decus Officium Fortitudo 03-12-2008 07:55 PM

any of the growling/ screaming metal bands :D

tkpb938 03-12-2008 08:02 PM

I would quite literally be in love with Genghis Tron if the lead singer would use melody at times... Of course the screaming is part of what makes them good, but a little harmony here and there would be nice.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-12-2008 08:10 PM

You're right about Dream Theater. I'd quite like them if they had a different singer

and guitarist

and bassist

and drummer

and keyboard player.

In all fairness, John Myung is an excellent bassist and doesn't actually overplay... but I'll give the rest to you. :D

LTE seems to be less wanky than DT for some reason... maybe it's because of Tony Levin's presence? In fact I actually like LTE.

cardboard adolescent 03-12-2008 11:48 PM

acid rain is really bad-ass

Frewen 03-13-2008 03:04 AM

Devil Sold His Soul.

I loved Mahumodo, so I was hyped when I founds out two new bands were emerging from the ashes. But I simply cannot stand DSHS's vocalist: he makes me angry.

jackhammer 03-13-2008 08:31 AM

Agent Steel and lot's of other metal bands that I would dig a lot more if it was'nt for the crappy vocal style.

John Petrucci really isn't that bad. they could do with a change though maybe in sound. but he's the reason why most people go to see Dream Theater in the first place. If they changed that, they wouldn't be so..."original"

I think that I'd have to say that I'd probably love Spiral Architect if they had a different vocalist, perhaps someone with more control over their voice. Same problem some have with Dream Theater, phenomonal instrumentalists with a rather underwhelming vocalists that can easily get on your nerves. Also, if you don't like Dream Theater because of the emphasis on the players and they're soloing and complexity, you might want to stay away from Spiral Architect as they focus on complexity over song quality much more than Dream Theater, it was aimed at a very specific crowd.

DearJenny 03-13-2008 12:16 PM

Coheed and Cambria.

Something about his voice just irks me. But the band is fairly ace.

Alfred 03-13-2008 12:31 PM

UnderOATH. I like them, but sometimes the screaming is just too much.

I can tolerate Wayne Coyne's vocals with their own material , but their cover of Bowie's Life On Mars is one of the most painful things I have ever heard.

mark1990celtic1888 03-13-2008 12:42 PM

if the killers had a better singer, then id love them. Not like i dont like them.

yeah man. If he sounded good live, then they would be one of the best live, acts.

Zer0 03-14-2008 03:25 AM

Probably Muse. I like their music but Matt Bellamy's voice irritates the hell out of me :yikes:

tkpb938 03-14-2008 08:13 AM

I can definitely see that^

cauterize_this 03-14-2008 09:53 AM

I say Anberlin..
Their music is good, and I like the lyrics..
But something about the singers voice makes me want to punch him in the throat

SATCHMO 03-14-2008 11:06 AM

Radiohead, without a doubt.

TRPBass16 04-03-2008 01:26 PM

to be totally honest if Dragonforce had a better singer i would be more into them, the songs are good, but for god sakes, put some balls behind youre vocals.

Every black metal band there is

RonAiden 05-07-2008 07:56 PM

Primus

TRPBass16 05-09-2008 01:20 PM

there is no way to describe how bad the singing is. the darkness, nuff said.

boo boo 05-09-2008 04:23 PM

What? Flaming Lips? Radiohead? Are you kidding me? What the hell?

I'd have to say, I would probably like progressive death metal bands like Opeth if it weren't for the vocals.

And I might like Dream Theater if they replaced their singer, and Petrucci. Those two are the big problem I have with Dream Theater. Seriously I don't like Petrucci, I couldn't even get into Liquid Tension Experiment and Tony Levin is probably my favorite bassist ever.

Portnoy is a damn good drummer, but he plays for other bands and Dream Theater is difinetely the worst of em, he plays for a prog supergroup called Transatlantic which also features Neal Morse of Spocks Beard, Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings and the guy who plays bass for Marillion. They have some pretty good stuff. If you like Spocks Beard check them out.

Myung and Rudess are great musicians too but they both have better projects than Dream Theater.

Comus 05-09-2008 05:33 PM

Black metal vocals are awesome.

But overall, vocals are not a big thing for me, they can be incredibly impressive, but if the vocals are the only thing bad with the music, then you're a failure for not listening to it.

Yeah, I don't place a very high priority on vocals, but that's not to say that I don't like them. Point being, that I can like a band if I hate the vocals.

I don't like Portnoy's work in Dream Theater really - it seems like he has a "I never met a fill I didn't like" style as someone on progarchives described it.

As a bassist, I think Myung is brilliant though. He exercises far more restraint than anyone in the band.

Alfred 05-09-2008 07:09 PM

Genghis Tron would be amazing if they would cut down on the shreiking.

I have to disagree, If I can hear the vocals and vocals are annoying, it ruins the song. However, I don't mind it when there are no vocals, that's fine.

boo boo 05-09-2008 08:11 PM

Overall I think the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This is why with some artists I like I can forgive lousy drumming (Metallica) or bad bass playing (AC/DC) and yes even bad singing. But no matter how "bad" someones singing is, if its unique theres usually something appealing about it, Personally I love the scruffy wailing of Axl Rose and the nasally tone of Billy Corgan, it interests me more than vocals that I think are derivative to the extreme, hence my disinterest for black metal and modern hardcore.

TrebleClef 05-12-2008 12:44 PM

Demonoid 05-13-2008 09:45 AM

Audioslave.
For some reason, i really hate their vocalist.

Lost_At_22 06-05-2008 03:27 AM

Disturbed, love the music, hate Draimans bloody voice. :yikes:

anticipation 06-05-2008 10:10 AM

The Blood Brothers singer is so horrible, but they're music is alright.

rockaholic93 06-05-2008 10:21 AM
