As good as The Who are and as much as I like them, I have to say they didn't just invent Rock. Genres aren't invented. Quote:
They didn't "become rock n roll" either, the genuine mod types continued through Soul, Northern Soul and more loosely, Ska. You really should do your homework ADELE, instead of making threads about something you only have a vague idea of, topped off with what appears to be your own imaginings. |

In that case, you might be able to justify your position on The Who. But you should be more clear about what you are saying. The way you were phrasing it was as if to say that they invented the sound, the aesthetic and so forth, which is nonsense. |
I do like her threads...they're brave.

My guess would be Rock & Roll, compared to, as the closest decade to todays age of modern rock. Would in my opinion be in & around the 50s. with the electric guitar, bass, etc. as guitar effects, reverb, overdrive, fuzz, etc. were added in the last 50yrs+. The Who, etc. was about 15yrs or so down the line. (In my opinion)

I think if anything, in regards to "My Generation", The Who would be the first punk band, not so much rock generally. Their antics on stage were just screaming "punk" especially with Keith Moon's destructive ass.

I think on reflection if we are all totally honest with ourselves the Who are probably the best live band ever. Certainly the first live band to do stadium rock. I used to love "behind blue eyes" and still do but I've mellowed with age. You could say the who were punk. I know your point about mods being american R&B. Without wanting to sound in anyway patronising when you look at it rock n roll as we know it came about through black slavery and the artists that sang about what it was like. I really think that is true. I mean all Rock n Roll. Inspired Elvis and the stones and the who and the Beatles etc etc and so on. Watch the blues brothers when they go into Harlem or wherever to buy instruments!!! That is how it started. But there are moments when a new era begins and all go that way. A signal post that changes the way we all go. The Who definately made Hard Rock. |
