You do have a point there but the Beatles were listening to the floyd in Abbey road and that was their inspiration for Pepper as Lennon said.

The Beatles were inspired by The Beach Boys and not Floyd to raise their game. McCartney has said this many times. Floyd just happened to be recording at the same time at Abbey Road. Rock Music is the blues amplified and distorted. Simple as that. No one can lay claim to being first.

YOU WHAT???
What stadiums have they filled out and what great songs did they make?
The Who are in the hall of fame as the first rock band.
I'm talking about hard rock. Stadium rock.
You wanted to debate who was first not who was the most popular. And I mentioned them to counter your Sabbath argument , not The Who.

Bowie and bolan were glam not hairspray rock.
Same thing

I knock the US as they always take our lea and then come in late and copy our styles before big US record companies mass produce their versions of our movements.
Both copy from the other , Where do you think for example The Rolling Stones , The Yardbirds , The Beatles & other British acts got their ideas from. I'll give you a clue it was from early American Rock n Roll & Blues artists , Not Cliff Richard & Adam Faith which was what was popular in the UK when those bands first started.

So the Who were the first?
I knew Urban Hatemongrol would agree with me.
But hairspray rock isn't glam.
It is bands like poison.
Glam is Glam.

The whole point seems a little trivial whatever way one looks at it. At the end of the day, rock owes its existence to the American music that came before in the earlier 20th century.

Who knows what British music would have come to sound like were it not for the existence of jazz, the blues and so forth. My guess is probably nothing particularly like The Who.

I'd love you guys and girls to write a book about rock history.
It all began in a feild in Africa and developed from there.
the end

I am talking about definitive moments when things changed and became somtheing new. The who were mods which is a UK scene of very sharp arrogant proud hip types but they became rock n roll that inspired all the led zeppilen and then black sabbath and stadium rock. Forget music ancestory.
Like art is categorised into periods but all have to do with what went before and so does film making. Marlon Brando didn't invent method acting but he created it in history for us to see. That is how it got into the dictionary and became known.
Therefore looking back we only have names and dates and history because of him and it.
Who remembers ragtime music?
Why doesn't it have a section in this forum?
Because it is forgotton. Same with skiffle which was huge once. What took pop music as it was called and turned it into hard rock n roll then followed by the zeppilen et al?
THE WHO
