I grew up loving The Kinks: first, the riff on those early singles, then the surprising developments of Ray as a songwriter, from See My Friend and beyond, then the slow realisation that Ray's special talent was the celebration of all things English.

I prefer Arthur which is a top ten record of all time for me, but yes, Village Green Preservation Society is not far behind and still great. The new remaster was gorgeous. And yes, the lyrics are clearly tongue and cheek throughout.
I've been getting back into their early 70's stuff more lately which is a lot better than I remembered. Especially Everybody's in Showbiz. |
