yes i know that. he became famous after he died. I still like his music. He is still one of my favorite people from the grunge movement. And to answer that question probly not.

But his death immortalized him.

And no, I'm not being ignorant. I've heard countless people tell me how sad it was when he died, but can't name a single goddamn song other than Smells Like Teen Spirit, and none of it prevents them from exclaiming how influential Nirvana was. Not to mention that half these people were younger than me when Kurt died, and at five years old, I certainly couldn't appreciate his music.

I'm not saying this because I hate grunge. I grew up listening to alternative radio and the only band that might have possibly eclipsed Nirvana in play time was perhaps the Pumpkins. But from all those years, I can now discern what I feel to be good music from bad, and let me tell you, Nirvana is as mediocre as they come. The songwriting glorifies a lifestyle which I could never be a proponent of and is mired in pessimism and misanthropy.

Just humor me for a few moments and imagine Nirvana descended into mediocrity like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains did after their immediate success. Would he have such an dedicated following as those others did if he went the way of Layna Staley and Shannon Hoon, dying after their time on top was long passed. Not only do I suggest that it is Kurt's suicide that immortalized him, but I believe Kurt knew exactly what he was doing at the time. A Neil Young quote via his suicide note:

'It's better to burn out than fade away.'

Kurt knew exactly what he was doing, he was adding his pop love to his punk love.

Their best albums were Bleach and Incesticide... I don't know why everyone likes Nevermind the best..,

It's the pop sheen. I was just thinking about that today. I used to play Nevermind on headphones a lot when it came out and it's never really worked well for me any other way, although the vinyl 45 of Teen Spirit is a joy (especially the B-side).

But if only it could have been recorded like In Utero! What a sound! I'd also like to hear Radiohead recorded like In Utero. How about it guys - Albini, Greenwood, Yorke - why not?

Actually, Nevermind woulda sounded great recorded like Bleach, too. The songs and attitude are fine. I played part of Nevermind for my girlfriend the other day (she managed to somehow miss it the first time around!) and she was amazed a major label had let them get away with some of that racket.

Bleach had a great production, because the producer was determined to capture the "live sound" of a band that mix it to God knows where.

But if any indie band tried to record like In Utero, it would sound crap. Only Nirvana and other bands of the time and place could record like that legitimately.

i suppose people like nevermind the best cause its got the pop sheen in the production and the big hit in the form of smells like teen spirit

i prefer bleach incesticide and in utero over nevermind by far
not to mention the bands whole worth seems to get put down to nevermind so often, and they had much more to offer

I completely agree. Bleach is my favourate. Krist and Dave have a lot of other material they're distributing once Courtney dies, so she gets no royalties.
