Shoegaze
the best thing ever done by anybody ever:
Anybody going to My Bloody Valentine's reunion gigs later this year? Could anybody clue me up on any shoegaze-influenced US indie bands? early (and recent album) Brian Jonestown massacre I know about, and I guess early Apples in Stereo were a bit more noise-based? I love the way the whole multi-layered feedback distortion stuff was briefly a sort of nu-psychedelia movement of it's own... edit: ofcourse it all goes back to sonic youth but you know what i mean... |
The Swirlies == awesome.

Mudhoney also used to do a fairly decent cover version. It's on the b-side to some 12" I've got somewhere. I did find this (fairly rough) live version though... This whole shoegaze / noise revival thing makes me want to dig out my old Telescopes, Ride, Thee Hypnotics and Loop stuff... |
mudhoney, without wanting to be too crass, were the dog's bollocks! there was so much post-hardcore brilliance to be found in 80's north america. i met this guy through a friend who was on the whole Boston scene in the early 80's and he turned me onto alot of cool stuff. i think he was part of the whole Moving Targets circle.

Why US bands in particular? :( <3 Slowdive
|
There's a lot of amazing shoegaze going on in the US, and I think interest in this surprisingly versatile and important genre is growing at a fast pace:
A classic top tier shoegaze band: The Jesus and Mary Chain check out their seminal album Psychocandy Newer shoegazers A Place to Bury Strangers are an amazing Brooklyn based outfit. |
All bands mentioned in this thread so far are awesome.
"Pygmalion" by Slowdive is probably a top 15 of all time record for me. |

I always thought Ride were only slightly overrated... TBH i need alot more shoegaze. it has to be said though that no album makes more sense at 5 in the morning after 36 hours awake than Loveless. I guess it's cause you're in the same zone than Shields was when he recorded it. You have to love the seemingly endless layers of distorted guitars...oh and the chord bending! |
^^ ahhh "You Made Me Realise"!
the feedback bit in the middle is bliss. About Ride...I've only heard "Nowhere", and apparently they got worse after that, but I think that's a really good album. Not up to par with the best shoegaze albums, but I like it quite a bit. To me it sounds like a really young, impressionable band trying to emulate their idols, and doing a damn good job of it. I dunno why I feel that, but there's an slightly amateurish, youthful quality about the album. Or so I like to think. |
Bailter Space are really good too
|
the aforementioned Swirlies are ****ing brilliant. thanks for the tip
How could I forget Blur on their first album Leisure??? Most of that album you have to classify as shoegaze... I love this video, it's infamous for the fact that Damon Albarn (the singer) had consumed ecstasy about half an hour beforehand, it's so obvious when you watch him. Lol @ Graham Coxon having to mime playing the reverse-guitar solo. Halcyon days to be sure... Bring back bowl haircuts. Lush were great aswell... |
Blonder Tongue Audio Baton by the Swirlies is one of Bob Mould's favourite albums of all time, I remember reading. It's definitely a top 90s album, that's for sure. It's got the lazy, slacker attitude of bands like Sebadoh and Pavement, some almost Polvo-esque slide guitar work, with all the shoegaze influences in there as well. Really cool band.
|
It's like Slanted & Enchanted mixed with Loveless ...
I mean, what more could you ask for? |
Autolux is probably my favorite current shoegazing band. They are ****ing amazing live. Saw them twice live and they are HEAVY.

Autolux are great, but they need to get some new s'hit released. Maybe they have and I've missed it...anyway, Future Perfect is a great album. |
Asobi Seksu are a NY-based dream pop band, but they have some of the densest, fuzziest guitars I've heard. The shoegaze influence is very apparent.
|
does anyone rate Galaxie 500? I've always hear alot about them but I'm undecided based on youtube excursions. I can't decide whether it's 'slowcore' proto-shoegaze goodness or just a bunch of people who can't play that happen to sound cool. hang on...

And I second enemyat_thesix's recommendation of Bedhead. |
Alcest are not quite shoegaze, but then again they are not quite metal or post rock either. Just a brilliant combination of all three. give it a listen.
I like Swerve driver too, but they had a poppy edge. I need to get some quality shoegaze. |

Someone sent me one of their albums about 6 months ago and I really liked it a lot. But I would definitely place them in shoegazing. That's just me though. |
Ride-Nowhere is one of the awesomest albums ever made.

Galaxie 500 are a good band who made three perfectly good albums, but I find if I listen to them for any length of time they get pretty boring. All their stuff is solid, that's for sure. They're a good band to listen to while you're reading.
Alcest (and Amesoeurs) are cool..very "epic" sounding bands. |
i love spacemen tres.........revolution is one of their best songs in my opinion
