Wow...I'm doubly jealous now. I love Portugal. The Man.

Well...music was solid. The show was a letdown, though. They had sound issues from the very beginning so Typhoon started late, so all the setlists got cut. Japandroids played second, but they only had about 25-30 minutes to play. They definitely had great energy, but they kept having to ask for soundchecks in between songs. By the time they really got into it, they were out of time. Same with Portugal. The Man, only even worse. The sound was just pitiful, they tried to fix it in between The Dodos and PTM's set but it turned into just a wall of noise. Drums/vocals barely audible at all. Then the main speaker even started cutting in and out. And they too could only play for about 45 minutes, which just isn't enough time to really get into it even without all the sound issues.

I'll definitely be checking Japandroids out further, just disappointing that they never were really able to get going. Oh well. Free show, can't complain too much.

These are from their album Post Nothing, really addictive stuff...

BOOM 1000 posts...glad it could be in the shoegaze thread
I personally wouldnt place Japandroids under the shoegaze tag, to me they're just noisy, powerful garage rock. They're decent, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Post Nothing a lot, but I just wouldnt say they're shoegaze.

I first learned the definition of shoegaze music from you and Anteater, I believe, and find that I enjoy quite a few songs in this subgenre.

Hey! I think this may be the first time we've conversed outside the chat box!
I'm glad you enjoyed that song; you might find shoegaze a genre to your liking.

And yes, I believe it's the first time I was graced with your presence outside the shoutbox.

Portugal. The Man are a great band, thought I'm still rather bewildered by their name choice.
I'd definitely enjoy seeing them live.

Unhappy

*Sigh* I love Shoegaze so much. This thread has been great.
I wholly recommend the Fleeting Joys as someone else had mentioned. Also i would constitute Lush as Shoegaze (during their "Split" album phase):

Check out "Desire Lines" by Lush on You Tube

Not sure if its been mentioned yet, but Atlas Sound seem to be carrying the Shoegaze torch into the 2000's:

Again, go to You Tube and look for "Recent Bedroom" by Atlas Sound.

Wish i could upload properly but apparently i need 15 posts

I think they kind of fit....they share a lot of characteristics with shoegaze bands. They have differences as well, but that's why I called it "garage shoegaze". What should a band sound like before it is considered shoegaze?

Shoegaze pertains to guitar effects (the idea that the musicians have to gaze at their shoes). By association it's usually quite spacey. I haven't heard Japan Droids, but as long as their music really gains its texture through using the guitar to create unique or different sounds, then it's probably Shoegaze-esque at least.

Yeah, they aren't big on effects but they definitely use the guitar to create an atmosphere with huge walls of sound. Just listen to "I Quit Girls" and tell me that's not totally shoegaze.

Either way, they are a great band and everyone should take a listen.
