Convincing might take more than physical repercussions! :P

I just think Vol. 4 is quite flat and overly loud. A downturn from their previous 3. Butler's bassline sounds non-existent, and seems to be turned all the way down. The drumming can sound uninspiring. It's not a bad album though. Wheels of Confusion is definitely fantastic.

I was going to respond, but my review probably gives a better response. I don't normally promote my journal like so It's review position 2.

Good job with the review.

I still stand by that the album could have been a lot better. However, the lyrics in this album are pretty good. For example in Cornucopia. Supernaut has great riffs but tracks like Laguna Sunrise is Iommi's weaker acoustic works. The guitars are too loud and it seems to overshadow the rest of the instrumentation especially the bass. Similar could be said for the drumming at times. It's just full of ups and downs.

By the time of Vol.4 the band's customary acoustic track had become somewhat predictable, therefore "Laguna Sunrise" is nothing special. As for the production I think it's one of their best and it was the only album that they produced at this time outside the UK and for these reasons the whole album has a distinct feel and certainly their most interesting.

They just don't have it in them to create anything that will ever be on the level of their first 3.

They are just riding the nostalgia wave. That was the whole point of this album (until Bill Ward was kicked out of course) to get together and write something with the original members, and bring them back together and create some magic.

Well, I doubt they have the power to re-write history like they did the first time around.

The odds are stacked against them. Sure, I bet they can deliver something that sounds good, but can they release something that will blow away their first 3... not a chance in hell.

That sample sounds good, but it is just nostalgic throwback... Plus, it is instrumental, no vocals and nothing to let us know the final version.

That could be a riff leftover from "Paranoid" that they put up as far as I care...

I have no doubt they will release something listenable... but I highly doubt they will release anything that will go down as their best album ever, and make people reach for it before they reach for those first 3 albums.

I am expecting nothing more than a nostalgic throwback.

I think the magic would have been better if they didn't kick out Bill Ward and those 4 got together and did something. But they went and screwed that up when they kicked out Bill.

p.s. That cover is so awful, that is the best they could come up with to represent their return. Oh man. I know that has nothing to do with the material, but it is pretty lazy and uninspired..

It's been over 40 years since their debut, I doubt these old guys have any creative juices left. As always it's just going to be a nostalgic trip for them to cash in and I expect the album to be poor to just average at best. Most bands no matter how good they are have a creative lifeline, Black Sabbath were lucky and had two, their Ozzy era and their Dio era. Since then the only great album they've put out was Headless Cross one great album since 1981, says it all really.

Who cares, just be happy we as fans get another album. If it isnt that good so what, we have plenty of old albums to keep on enjoying.

"just riding the nostalgia wave?" WTF are you talking about man, these guys have spent their lives making music together, it is their passion...why shouldnt they take every possible opportunity to make more music.....?
