Kurt Cobain said Nevermind was too slick and poppy for his tastes and that In Utero was the album he was most proud of. That being said Nevermind is easily my least favorite Nirvana album while In Utero is easily my favorite.

I think I would say In Utero, but only because Nevermind was so popular. I mean, they are honestly so close that if In Utero had been the mega-popular album, I would probably say Nevermind.

It doesn't surprise me that in retrospect, Cobain would disown Nevermind. He absolutely hated the success it brought him. I mean, Crowquill, do you actually think Cobain thought he was being slick and poppy when he was writing the record? Nevermind has some gems like Territorial Pissings and Something in the Way. Actually, I like all the songs that haven't got a sh*t load of radio play.

You don't have to hate on something because it's popular. Just because Nevermind was popular doesn't make it bad. You shouldn't let how many records were sold or how much the songs were played on the radio influence your opinion of the music.

I think he is saying that hearing tracks from Nevermind all the time kinda spoils it. It was a solid album, but you can only hear the same song so many times before it makes you sick.

I vote In Utero.

Probably, he had just gotten evicted during the recording of Nevermind and was living in his car. I'm pretty sure he was aware it was poppy and wanted money. Hence why he agreed to a music video, signing to geffen etc. I think this whole "Kurt Cobain was thrown into unwanted fame" thing is slightly exaggerated. I think Kurt began to dislike his fame once he achieved it but if he'd really hated the idea of being famous he would've never left Subpop.

Word word word. Why the hell go major label if you want to stay smalltime? Same goes for the rest of the bands like Pearl Jam with Ten and so forth. I hate it when people try to turn these characters into some sort of angels who were diametrically opposed to success, fame and fortune. Like that's supposed to make them better artists or something. Foolish.

I don't know how much truth there is in this but at the time I beleive it was heavily rumoured Sub Pop was about to be bought out by a major label anyway , so Cobain wanted to sign to a label that wanted Nirvana on it with backing & promotion rather than being just one band among all the other Sub Pop bands having their contracts taken over by a label that might not want them all.

Which makes sense when you think about it. Of course he could have gone to another indie label but took Thurston Moore's advice & went to Geffen. And signing to a major doesn't automatically give you success.

I couldnt agree more, In Utero is such a departure from what they did previously. I love when bands get heavier and less poppy haha, like finch with Say Hello To Sunshine

i don't think it was ever an issue of the bands disliking success. they disliked the way mass media warped their success to propagate their own ends.

either way in utero owns.
