What does it matter what albums are selling the best. We all know that some of the best metal is the metal that is far away from being mainstream, thus, won't sell as many albums.

Metal died with puberty for me

The "Black Album" by Metallica was a sell-out piece of ****, in my opinion, as well. Prong made better music with three members than Slipknot does with nine and Korn's non-stop whining is annoying. Yet, Metallica is the original definitive metal band, Slipknot is the "Kiss" of their generation - i.e. your little brother digs the gimmick at first but winds up listening to Reign In Blood in the end (it's newb metal, in other words), Korn... well, all I can say about them is: The Korn/Zombie tour was one of the best ****ing shows I ever saw... But, that was mostly because of Zombie. Also, having lost my little brother to cancer at 15, I always admired the song "Justin" and the story behind it. |

The decline time frame is coincidental - to be sure - metal was declining before Dime died. It just serves as a backdrop for the bigger point (also made a catchy subject line, I thought). For instance, ask any baby boomer when psychedelic rock declined and they will probably tell you "when Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison died". Of course, ask any old-school metal fan about that same thing and they will tell you that Black Sabbath transformed psychedelic rock into heavy metal, therefore it never really declined - only evolved (less acid, more tritone, double the bass). The question is: Is metal going to evolve... or die? If bands like Unexpect are the next step for metal, my guess is the latter. |
Well do something about it. If you're so disappointed with metal of today, then make them eat **** and start a band. Redefine metal, or at very least breathe life into it as it were. PErsonally, I'm satisfied. Sure, I wish all the crappy bands would die, but if you spend all your time going "Eighteen Visions ****ing blows" instead of looking for the good bands, you're just a whiner. Look for the silver lining in the clouds.

who is this dimebag ***?
Is he from one of the most prominent metal bands around Korn? |
He's the dude from damageplan/pantera who was shot on stage. And no, not Korn.

why would anyone even classify Korn as metal?
|
Why wouldn't they be?
Since when were metal bands considered not metal bands just for having a commercial sound and generally being crap? |
I don't rule them out of metal for having a commercial sound.....I feel like they rely alot on bass sounds for most of their songs.....I don't know what to classify them as but I just don't see them as metal...they'd probably fit better into Hard Rock or Alternative. Sometimes they throw in some industrial sound effects.

Metallica actually annoys me quite a bit. I don't see how they could be the birth of such great music...

Of course, this is excluding that third class - to whom you ask: "What's your favorite Metallica album?" and they answer "The Black Album". Those are the Kid Rock / Linkin Park types that need not even enter this discussion. I think people chose "Master" over "Justice" because of Cliff Burton, but I think Cliff's death caused Metallica to make their best album... You can hear the anger and the anguish in the sound... It's absolutely where they peaked, and not before. |

They don't sound that different to all the funk metal bands in the early 90s , they were considered metal.
|
Funk metal is not a real genre... and the term sounds like RATM, Primus, and Faith No More being incorrectly labeled.
|
I was actually referring to bands such as Mordred & Mind Funk who all started off from thrash backgrounds.
|
I sampled Mindfunk, only their first album really sounds like metal. And that album sounds nothing like Korn. Their other two albums sound more like grunge or alternative and didn't sound very metal at all, but they remind more of Korn.
Mordred sounds more like that funky thrash. It feels more like gimicky type deal, going overboard with the funk over a general thrash routine. This doesn't sound like Korn at all either. |
So in other words they're not metal based on a technicality
Ok then. |
Not sure what you mean...

Nu Metal is not a type of metal. Names can be deceiving but the term refers to the slight influences of metal. However, the alternative rock, grunge, and hip hop elements far overshadow any metal traits making it more akin to rock then even trying to approach metal.
|
Well, if it were up to me I'd put Nu-Metal under the umbrella of Metal. But, I guess it's not. When I hear Korn I think Metal, but then again I don't know much more about Nu-Metal than Korn anyway.
To be honest I don't really care what you call it, I'm not even a big fan of the style anyway. What we need now however is a separate genre just for DragonForce. I'm a big fan of Power Metal, but not of DragonForce. They should be called Silly Metal, or Stupidly Fast Metal, or maybe WTF Is This Metal. |

Judging from your list, it doesn't look like you've tried too hard to find metal you like. You've barely scratched the surface and thrown up the white flag.

Also, keep in mind that the people who go out and buy these CD's are the ones who pay to go to Ozzfest. Their opinion = nothing substantial. |

and Wayfarer, I shoulda read your posts more closely haha. I agree with your points. (DM = death metal) |
If anything, metal has been rejuvenated since 2004. The net has really helped bring back the DIY underground metal scene.
|
the internet has also brought more people to listen to metal. but with dimebag on a few peoples minds they dont know whether they should listen to crap shoot music or should they listen to the music dimebag recommends for them. i personally stopped listening to what dimebag says only to the point to where i could listen to music that i wanna listen to.
