Even then, I've heard they sped one up in order to compare them, but they probably failed to mention that.
They didn't speed one up, I've heard the comparison and listened to the originals later. Not only is the music very similar but so are the lyrical themes. People can argue they're not the same or plagiarized or whatever, but they are very similar.

A huge portion of RHCP's songs are about sex and women, as is Dani California. And Dani California is a recurring them throughout Californication and By the Way as well. This song is simply continuing the theme.

As for Mary Jane's Last Dance, that might not even be about women - knowing Tom Petty and the Mary Jane reference, there's a good chance that it's about drugs. Even if it is about women, that is such a common lyrical theme in rock that I wouldn't split hairs over it.

They are sort of similar in lyrical style (both ballad-like), but if you ask me, that chord progression is suggestive of a ballad. Ballads fit that progression/rhythm perfectly.

I really don't understand why you'd even argue against them being similar, they are. Even if the song is a giant metaphor with drugs, it still deals with similar imagery of a troubled girl.

I'm not saying they aren't similar - I'm just saying I don't think it was ripped off.

With the hundreds of thousands of millions of artists out there, you are going to have plenty of similarities. John Fogerty almost got sued for alledgedly stealing a riff from his OWN damn song, back when he was in CCR. The record label tried to sue him or something, about writing a song similar to one off a CCR album. How dumb is that?

I wrote a paper once on that same occurrence. Cymbaline is supposedly an amalgamate of all of Shakespeare's other plays and so I wrote a play for my final year in the English program about Shakespeare on trial in the same vein as Fogerty.

I like Led Zeppelin. Houses of the Holy was playing when I got my first blow job. And no, I did not grow up in the 70s.

Depending on your company it IS trendy to hate certain bands. It was really, really trendy to hate Green Day for awhile... I'm glad that died down.

I think Revolution 9 is horrible.

Default worst song

Metallica has done some bad **** in the past decade, but what really pissed me off was "Mama Said" on Load. I sorta gave em a chance up until that point.

Changes by Black Sabbath hurts to listen to as well

I actually liked the Ice Cream Man by Van Halen I didn't think it was there worse song, I hate Sammy Hager, alot of people liked him I hated his voice and everything about him, I didn't like Montrose either I just never liked Sammy Hager I liked David Lee Roth, he was more of a rocker then Sammy he made the band all dance music and all that crap for that I miss the old Van Halen back when they would do Really Got Me now they were rocking then.
