Yeah I know but still if you hear someone singing about space travel it makes sense to consider it sci-fi themed. Proggy said to the person who said that you havn't even listened to the lyrics, despite the fact their most listened to song on lastfm talks about it.

"Traveling through both space and time
Out of body Out of mind Out of control" is more spiritual psychedelic mumbo jumbo than scifi. i don't think i've heard any dt song that is really sci-fi in nature. i'm sure there is one, they're probably geeks at heart. |

I don't think it's the subject of the lyrics thats the problem. Hawkwind managed to write sci fi lyrics and make them interesting.
What the problem is is that DT use every lyrical cliche under the sun. Their lyrical abilities would struggle to match some hair metal band from 1985.

New here- and gotta say..seems like a pretty cool place.
Now- I gotta admit to liking SOME of the Dream Theater stuff- I have Octavarium and Systematic Chaos as well as Images and Words and like a few songs from each cd. Some of the songs on each of these recordings are pretty high on the cheese factor- and it seems odd to me that LaBrie has a VERY good vocal range- but doesn't seem to know who he wants to be. If you listen to several songs from several recordings you can easily determine that he can MIMIC many different styles- but nothing seems to stand out as his own. Some of these songs sound like a cover tune of their influences- is it just ME or has anyone noticed that the title track for "Octavarium" picks up on the same chord and tone that Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" cd ends on?? Hmmmm.... The musicianship and technical skill is definitely there- but I've seen these guys on DVD ("Score" DVD) and seen Petrucci on the latest G3 DVD and I gotta admit that I might as well be watching grass grow..BORING!!! I understand this stuff is tough to play, but hell..don't just stand there like a jackass in a hailstorm..MOVE AROUND..ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU ARE PLAYING IN FRONT OF A LIVE AUDIENCE!! And last- does LaBrie have some sort of speech or singing problem (seriously) I mean- I look at videos or live footage and his tongue is hanging out and he looks like he's about to barf..what's THAT all about?? ANYHOW- Cool place.. nice to be here. |
