not gonna quote everything i just saw but...

ignoring Mother's Milk and the Uplift Mofo Party Plan... SHAME!

Jane's Addiction being funky - yeah, not really. i think a lot of people automatically associate funk with staccato guitar playing. yes, Navarro did strum in both directions and did more than chug riffs but like he said in interviews during his time with the peppers, he could 'play' funk, but he was not a 'funky' guitarist. much in the same way that it's obvious from old school tracks that Frusciante could play metal no one called him a metal guitarist.

in short Jane's Addiction was to the Red Hot Chili Peppers what Led Zeppelin was to the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

also Eric Avery's solo career trumps all the combined solo careers of all the associated band members put together to my ears.

I don't think anyone here is making the case that Dave Navarro was a funky guitarist. What I'm saying is that the rhythm section of Jane's Addiction is why they are associated with funk metal.

I've only heard one of their albums. BSSM and it was generally excellent.

yeah i suppose but it's still only on a minority of their tracks. i know at this point alternative rock has little to no meaning but back in their day Jane's fit that bill to a T. Stephen Perkins is too much of a monster drummer on those albums to settle into the pocket and while Avery is a phenomenal bass player capable of cutting deep grooves they just don't feel funky to me.

when i dug out that clip for 'nobody's weird like me' last night i also found a bunch of rhythm lessons hosted by Chad Smith with Flea on the side to fill things out. they dissect what a funky rhythm section is all about and while those two guys can slip into a funky groove smoother than water comes out of a tap at the drop of a hat, Jane's never got that funky. they could get people to free their minds and bob their heads but they could never get their asses to follow the way the Peppers did.

i can't think of more than 4 Jane's tunes that i'd call funk metal. stop / been caught stealing / idiot's rule / standing in the shower thinking, hardly enough to categorize the band especially when they've got superior songs in different styles.

I remember seeing this thing on bass guitar, and they talked about it and how it's used and all the great players - Flea was a part of that and the stuff he did blew my mind.

'Warped' is an above-average song, 'Coffee Shop' has an insane bass line, and I know you hate their ballads but 'My Friends' ain't so bad. Better than 'Breaking the Girl' at the very least. I like 'Pea' a lot for what it is; it's different and I like how it gave Flea a new opportunity to express himself. Those four plus 'Aeroplane' are really the only tracks from One Hot Minute I find myself playing regularly...

The guitar he used to record that solo in Walkabout is insane.

Yeah, "Warped" is okay. Hearing that song was actually why I bought the album when it came out, but over the years I've become a lot less enamored of it for some reason. The other ones are meh for me.

I listed to Freaky Styley earlier today for the first time in ages. Good times. A+ for 'The Brothers Cup'.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.
