They always get classified as such and I don't really see it. But yeah, Faith No More for sure. Early Incubus is another excellent example of funk metal...

Only slightly I guess. I think that association comes more from the scene they were coming from than anything else.

Yeah, I'd even say slightly is a stretch. I don't think I've ever associated funk with Jane's Addiction. They were straight up alternative with more of a punk edge. But maybe I missed something.

I don't think that's a more accurate description though. They're not very punk sounding at all and "alternative" is such a catchall term that it's pretty much meaningless.

Edit: One other thing I want to add about them being considered funk-metal is you have to look at that description in the context of 1980s metal. Their music did have much more prominent basslines than contemporary metal, so in that sense I guess the funk-metal label makes more sense.

That's why I added the punk edge part. How were they not? Listen to Nothing's Shocking and tell me there isn't some punk in there. The alternative aspect is a catchall for a band that was doing something generally different than what was coming out at the time - and they definitely were that.

They really influenced the grunge that was to come...and grunge is generally described as having a punk influence. Not that I would correlate Jane's Addiction in that way, but seriously...how was their music not influenced by punk.

I guess I see your point that they were somewhat punk influenced, at least in the way they presented themselves. It's not all that noticeable in the music itself IMHO.

I added another paragraph to my previous post but I think we kind of cross-posted and you may have missed it. Anyway here it is for what it's worth:

Since this conversation has inspired me to pop on Nothing's Shocking, I'm also realizing that it's pretty hard to deny the fact that a song like "Idiots Rule" is funk-metal by basically any measure.

Actually, now that I think of it, "Been Caught Stealing" is pretty funky too.

Yeah, I missed it. And I can totally agree with that. I'm actually listening to Ritual de lo Habitual, and honestly, coming at it actually looking for the funk influence, I'm noticing a whole ton more of it than I had before.

Another reason to love Jane's Addiction, I guess.

I don't know if I'd really describe it as funky but it's definitely one of the greatest bass lines ever!
