I have to disagree with that first part; in my (limited) listening experience I've noticed that lead singers tend to move away from the backing a little bit rather than singing each and every single note. I think songs flow better that way. I like the other technique once in a while but it gets tiresome when it's used so often.

List of famous singers who stuck to backing music:
Paul Mccartney
Mick Jagger
Joe Strummer(As far as he could go anyway)
David Bowie

I could go on, and on, but I think that's enough.

Of those I'm the biggest fan of David Bowie and at this very moment I can't think of a single song where he'll only sing the notes that the guitar is playing. I imagine he's done it at least a few times in his career but nothing's coming to mind.

If you take something like As The World Falls Down you'll notice that he's moving away from the stuff that's going on in the background.

Space Oddity, Changes, etc. Of course he doesn't do it on every song, but neither does Kiedis.

I don't think you're talking about the thing I'm talking about, because it definitely doesn't happen throughout Changes.

He sings in the same octave as the backing music, and is usually pretty close to the exact same note.

It's never dead-on for long enough, though. I'll go through the RHCP back catalogue when I've got a load of time to waste and see if I can find some more perfect examples.

Don't bother, the peppers have too many musical styles to stick to one format.

I highly doubt Joe Strummer gave a fuck what octave he was singing in.

No, but he had very limited range, so not much choice. As a band the Clash were amazing, but not wildly experimental or complex.
