I'm the prog dork of course I prefer Mr. Bungle.

California is a perfect album, something RHCP never managed to make. BSSM is very good but it could have been trimmed, 70 minutes of RHCP goes a long way.

Anyway it's a funny coincidence that Mr. Bungle's 3 albums were all released in the same years as RHCP's 3 90s albums.

I wonder if Anthony thinks that was a conspiracy lol.

How do you feel about the way it's mixed? There's a reason Rick Rubin is considered the worst offender of the loudness war and it starts with Californication. There's no dynamic range whatsoever, digital clipping is all over the place and listening to it even at mid volume is exhausting to my ears.

There is an earlier "Unmastered" mix of the album that was leaked to the internet ages ago, it has a different track listing including two tracks that were cut from the final album, it is definitely an improvement and while the sound quality still isn't great listening to it no longer makes me feel like my eardrums are going to collapse and I can finally appreciate what I consider to be some of the band's best songs.

However one of those extra tracks is called Fat Dance and it's one of the stupidest songs I've ever heard, yes even by RHCP's horny frat boy standards, I can see why that one didn't make the cut.

Me? When it was released I liked it, and I like 3-5 songs they've released since Californication, but they're a radio-band, not a on-my-playlist band.

I never listened to them closely enough to notice things like mixing but I don't like Californication because it's where they stopped doing their thing of hard rock with funk baselines and became yet another guitar pop band.

Of the three albums I've heard One Hot Minute is the second best. Yes it has its share of revolting ballads but also plenty of tracks that rock.

Flea is carrying that song. Once again, Anthony is dropping a nuke on it.
