Possibly before Californication you could say so, but their later stuff started steering towards being generally poppy. They lost their touch pretty quick.

I'm With You and Stadium Arcadium are two must have's in a Red Hot Chili Peppers collection if you ask me. More I'm With You than the other. I don't agree that they don't sound unique. Kiedis doesn't strike me as a guy to have a voice that sounds like everything else, it's definitely different.

They did indeed. Their touch never even made it out of the 80s imo.

Personally, I love By the Way. If I divide them into 80's/90's/00's era RHCP, my favorite albums are the Uplift Mofo Party Plan, Blood Sugar Sex Magic, and By the Way. After that, though, I have to admit I lost interest. Without John again, I just can't care.

Those two I consider a perfect example how progressively poppy they're getting.

His voice wasn't highly unusual. Barely distinctive at most. He did a lot of bland rapping before he tried to sing, which became more of a disaster. Really they were a downplayed funk rock band with a hint of eventually fading punk. Frusciante had hooks, and that's about it. I'm not even gonna get into Chad. Flea was the only member that brought versatile to bass like no other, for his time.

Forgot to mention the Hillel era was pretty great though.

Gotta disagree on Frusciante he was very good at soloing. I understand hes a Hendrix disciple, but he really was more then just hooks. I've never considered Kiedis a very good vocalist, but I think that helped the band in a weird sort of way by creating this soup of soul between the players. Also Flea can't touch Bootsie or Stanley Clarke, but hes definitely mucho bueno. Chad has always been just a standard beat drummer holding down the bottom, but hes capable.

Maybe I just like the more poppy RHCP because the two albums I mentioned are two of my favorite RHCP albums.

Frusciante was a competent guitarist, and good at soloing. I like him. But in terms of distinction the only grip I found was his hooks. Suppose all together there is nothing really special about their sound overall IMO. They had their phases, but that's about it. Clarke and Bootsy were both great, but I don't see how Clarke had a similar sound to Flea. Bootsy however is debatable, but he was a lot more funky while Flea tried adapting it heavier to suit RHCP's sound.

There's no problem with that. :P

Just noting you said that he had made the bass sound like no other in that time period. I feel stanley and bootsy certainly did achieve a better sound and were better players in general, at least to my ears. I think in the 80's they brought something that nobody had brought to popular music. When I say popular I mean popular at my high school. There was something very innovative in their sound at the time and the rapping vocal styling of Kiedis was very different from the Run Dmc's and Grandmaster Flash's of the time. I haven't bought a chili record since Blood Sugar, so I can't really comment about their new offerings, but there was something awesome going on when they first got together we agree on that.

Curious. When did you actually start listening to the band?
