I feel like the only one who sees genre as a complete necessity, if they weren't there checking out music would be alot harder. I mean how would you describe something? Its easy to say "Oh this is folk with hints of electronic" and describes the sound well, if there weren't genres you'd be all. "Well its that acoustic stuff like Bob Dylan, but its more mellow like Paul Simon and its got slight hints of that computery stuff like Daft Punk but more similar to Radiohead" blah blah, see how long winded it makes it? And describing certain artists would be impossible.

Genres make it easy to check something out because it gives you an idea of what it sounds like beforehand, so you know if its worth checking it out or not. For instance, I don't like metal so if someone tells me to check out this death metal band I won't check it out because I don't like metal. Genres = win.

Personally, I would prefer the long winded explanation.
As a music loving person, I like discussing music so the more I can talk about it, the better. Why would I cut that short by by saying "Post Punk" or whatever when I have a chance to have a longer musical discussion?

I see them as a complete necesssity as well, but if I don't like a genre I'll still check out a band from it. Chances are that there are bands you would like in genres you dislike.

I agree we need genre's, but do we really need all the many subgenres?

Default Sub-genres of metal -- wtf??

OK, way back at the dawn of Creation, when I was a lad and boybands roamed the Earth fighting for the Christmas Number One spot, there were two types of "heavy" music --- heavy(or hard) rock and heavy metal. Now it seems that like a clusterbomb going off in the skies above Kandahar, there are suddenly dozens!
Can anyone explain to this old codger what the difference is between the likes of power metal/thrash metal/speed metal/doom metal and so on, cos I'm really confused! What's happened to the music I loved?
And while we're on the subject (veering slightly off, I'll grant you), what happened to metal bands with long, headbangin' hair? I saw the cover of Kerrang! (which used to be my bible) and they have a band called Satyricon? The guy on the cover (presumably the lead singer/frontman) sure don't look like any metal singer I ever knew --- maybe Rob Halford, but I just wondered if this is the trend now, or does it even matter?
And now, I have to go have a cup of warm milky tea in the afternoon sun before my nap....
