The solo in War Pigs by Sabbath is just wonderful.

that said, generally, i see guitar solos are a waste of time in a song because it distracts me from the whole atmosphere of the song, and I always end up thinking "fine, you can play guitar well - now play something that SOUNDS good rather than an indecipherable 10 notes a second". Maybe you guitarists can find MORE VALUE in them though.

Blasphemy! Sometimes a good guitar solo can actually salvage a song.

GravitySlips 07-28-2007 04:56 PM

True. A dull or lagging song can be JUICED UP real nice by a good solo. But I say the reverse is much more often the case, with me at least.

Music Man 07-30-2007 01:41 AM

Highway Song--Blackfoot

joyboyo53 07-30-2007 07:56 AM

tears in the rain -joe satriani
texas flood - srv

.. although they are both songs, they are really more like long solos.

Julesio 07-31-2007 08:02 AM

Metallica - Orion. Not my favorite solo of all time (c'mon, how can you choose ONE?), but definitely would be on the top of the list.

Frank Zappa-Sexual Harrassment In The Workplace. He is one seriously underated guitar player.

Yeah, but when a guitar solo makes the song suck it is because it is by a band that sucks at guitar anyway.

Well, soloing isn't required of every player. Rhythm is more than enough to showcase ones skills.

There was this one Indie band I heard though, Overvil River, the song was called For Real. What I recall most is how ridiculously bad the solo was.

Well, the solos don't make the song SUCK as such, but when I'm enjoying a good piece of music which is interrupted by some flash guitar solo, it is annoying. Nah actually, I don't mind solos as long as they don't go on forever, with some exceptions.

It fits the song, plus the solo is kind of dirty which fits their sound, I don't see anything wrong with it though Okkervil River soloing is kind of eh for the most part because its unnecessary.
