Dog Fashion Disco

anyone here into Dog Fashion Disco?
They're a very bizarre metal band, adding elements of jazz, film-noir, jazz, circus music, etc.
Alot of their songs, regardless how dark and heavy, use a church organ instead of a piano/keyboard.

If anyone's heard them.
Tell me what you think

And do you know any similar bands to them?

onepointsixone 05-16-2007 04:05 PM

yea i like DFD!
'committed to a bright future' is my favourite album of theirs, it has some awesome songs on it.
guess mr.bungle are similiar but the mr. bungle stuff i've heard wasn't as catchy as DFD.

I have ANARCHISTS OF GOOD TASTE-the only I have-but i love it.

onepointsixone 05-17-2007 03:21 PM

oh u gotta get "committed..." it's at least three times better than "anarchists..." :)

Nathan Explosion 05-18-2007 06:54 AM

I just read this on theprp.com
"Polkadot Cadaver, the new group featuring former members of Dog Fashion Disco, have posted their new track "Chloraform Girl" online here (www.myspace.com/polkadotcadaver)"

I have liked these guys for a long time. Weren't they originally gonna be called "Hug A Retard"?

lol wow that would be great! Anyways, my old band was supposed to play with them in Baltimore, but our singer quit so we had to cancel, dag nabbit!

jackhammer 05-27-2007 04:49 PM

Just got COMMITED-absolute quality-I really like this band, they really **** around with the conventions of music.

lucifer_sam 10-08-2008 08:12 PM

Thought I would resurrect this thread for an awesome, awesome band. It's hard to pick out my favorite album, most of them are so good. The lead singer feels that Adultery will turn out to be a cult album at a later time. We can make it happen. :)

Todd Smith has a new project now, but I haven't heard any of its music.

Symbiosis 10-11-2008 08:25 AM

I downloaded a couple of songs by them. Not really a fan of their sound. Maybe I have the wrong songs. I might get my hands on an album soon.

lucifer_sam 10-13-2008 09:27 PM

Obviously. I've listened to their discography and The Embryo's In Bloom is my favorite. But all of them are good, so good.

I hadn't heard too much about this band but an old friend recommended them to me over the holidays (and El Creepo). I just got through sampling most of their albums on Amazon and they definitely sound very much like their influences, but I'm willing to go for it. I'm a longtime Patton fan but by all accounts I've read, these guys pull off the sound very well without sounding like rip-offs. I mean, they do sound like rip-offs but they supposedly have talent and do it well. So I'm downloading Adultery.

The first time I had ever head of these guys, I saw them open for System of a Down in 2001 or 2002. And they were ****in' great live. Weird as shit, but great all the same. I didn't really get into them until I was 18 when I bought Anarchists of Good Taste. Great album. And Adultery was highly anticipated when I heard it was coming out. And I wasn't disappointed when it dropped. And then they toured one more time and broke up. Balls.

I didn't really think of them much again until my friend Dan was over at my house with his Ipod, and he had Adultery and Committed to a Bright Future on it. I had since lost my copy of Adultery, I got them both from him. I listened to Adultery on the way home from our show on Saturday, and it brought a lot of nostalgia.

LoathsomePete 01-20-2010 09:51 PM

I recently got Adultery the other week and I was really enjoying it. I think my favourite song on it was "Private Eye" just because I have a thing for that Noir sound. Anarchists Of Good Taste is my next stop on these guys, but I'm kind of taking a bit of a break from downloading for a week or two and absorb all the stuff I got over the last month.

I'm hearing that right now for the first time...I like it. I always loved Patton's "softer" or higher pitched vocals, and I like the darkness of the track and parts of it even remind me of Lovage. Win.

I am enjoying this album.

ElephantSack 01-21-2010 01:13 PM

Hate to rain on your parade, but that's not Mike Patton. I was just having this conversation with my little brother yesterday.
This was their final line-up.
* Todd Smith - vocals
* Jasan Stepp - guitars
* Brian "Wendy" White - bass guitar
* John Ensminger - drums
* Jeff Siegel - keyboards
* Matt Rippetoe - horns
Straight outta Baltimore, baby.

He is, I could have sworn it was Patton as well, the vocals were nearly identical.

sidewinder 01-21-2010 04:38 PM

Woah, hold up. I was being sarcastic in asking if he was serious. Meaning, "duh...I know it's not Patton". I've been a Patton fanboy since the early 90s, I'm very well aware that it's not Mike Patton. If it was, I'd have been listening to this band since their first album. :)

My last post was simply implying that the singer here was mimicking Patton's "softer" or higher pitched vocals in that particular song, and that parts of the song reminded me of the way he sung in Lovage, but also the sexuality of it. I wouldn't have felt to need to make any of those comparisons if it actually was Patton. ;)

ElephantSack 01-21-2010 04:41 PM

I don't know. I can definitely tell a difference between Dog Fashion and any Mike Patton project. If we want to talk about Patton mimics, lets talk about Incubus.

As can I, I don't think I gave the impression otherwise.

I always considered Incubus' S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (and probably the stuff before too) to be heavily Bungle-influenced, but no more than Dog Fashion Disco is. None of Incubus' stuff since has sounded like Bungle or any other Patton project. There may still be a hint of Patton influence in the vocals, a tiny hint that has probably faded with each release, but that's about it.
