Avantgarde Metal / Experimental Metal.

of course, Avantgarde metal is probably one of the very controversial styles within the metal community. Alot of people not actually accepting its existence.

I'm really into pretty much anything Avantgarde when it comes to music. As long as it has aesthetic quality as well as quality and substance.

Only really Avantgarde metal bands I can think of which are 'really' metal are groups like Ephal Duath and the Diablo Swing Orchestra.
Symphony X have alot of Avantgarde qualities to them (at least by what I consider Avantgarde)

Who here is into Avantgarde metal, and if so, what are some good bands?

I like Fantomas and Mr. Bungle, both of which are avant-garde.

Kayo Dot.

also..
The Angelic Process
Time of Orchids
Nadja
ASVA
Wolfmangler (but thats getting to doom/drone territory)

It all depends really on what you'd class as avant garde.. stuff like Khanate, Neurosis.. even Sunn O))) could potentially fall under the title..

Aarni are pretty damn avant, in the doomy sense. And Volt are a doomy Mr. Bungle.

Muzak 03-30-2007 04:43 PM

Unexpect
Blut Aus Nord
Arcturus
Maudlin of the Well
Gorguts
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (not sure if this is considered metal though)
Mr. Bungle
Faith no More

in my opinion, kayo dot is post-metal, which is an entirely separate entity from experimental/avant-garde metal.

ahh. Mr. Bungle. (Mike Patton is a bloody legend)

Nathan Explosion 04-06-2007 05:01 PM

Arcturus and Big Dumb Face are amazing...in their own ways, lol.

InvokeTheDarkAge 04-06-2007 06:41 PM

i second Gorguts, although the only album that could be really considered avant-garde is Obscura, the other three album are more brutal death but still very very kickass

Hey, cool discussion!
I just found a website dedicated to avant-garde metal:

avantgarde-metal .com

Many great weird bands featured there, also many of those mentioned here!

(Unfortunately I cannot post the link, because I have written less than 15 postings. So maye someone of you could post the right link?)
