Amen to that.

If you like Gilmour you should check out Steve Rothery, he plays for Marillion, not big fans of them myself but he is an excellent guitarist, and his style is a little similar to Gilmours.

Reading this thread, I just realized I recently watched a taping of the G3 festival where the three of these guys played. I must say, it's pretty impressive watching all of these guys do what they do.

Yeah, I was kinda disapointed with Malmsteens performance though... He didn't hold things together quite as well as Satch and Vai did.

^True. He was entertaining to watch though...with all the throwing of the guitar over his back. Vai did an amazing job at that show.

Steve Vai is the greatest guitarist on that list and indeed ever.

No-one comes close to him.

From a technical standpoint, I couldn't say...but as far as their music goes, I'd go with:

1- Malmsteen, though not very diverse in his songwriting and most of his lyrics are cheesy, has a great sense of melody and I like his neo-classical sound.

2- Satch's albums tend to drone on for me, but every now and again he pulls out a melodic masterpiece.

3- I like Vai's sound and I commend him for experimenting with different styles and effects, but in the end most of his work lacks the melody I desire, and the goofy vocal samples he uses sometimes...like in 'Little Green Men'...nah, no thanks.

Vai is difinitely the most well rounded, creative and original axe man. And the most skilled, he's capable of different styles. Malmsteen however is all Neo Classical Shred.

A guitar player is technique AND sound. BB KING Blows the ass of most guitarists.
