If this was the only choice I had in listening to guitarists i'd spend the rest of my life listening to pan pipes albums.

I don't really care for any of their music personally... But Vai without question, Passion & Warfare is all the proof you need that this guy is the best... He's the most capable, skilled and versatile of the three... Satch tends to be a little sloppy, and his song composing skills are not even close to being as clever as Vais... As for Malmsteen, he's the best neo classical shredder on the planet, but thats pretty much all he's good for.

From a technical standpoint, I couldn't say...but as far as their music goes, I'd go with:
1- Malmsteen, though not very diverse in his songwriting and most of his lyrics are cheesy, has a great sense of melody and I like his neo-classical sound. 2- Satch's albums tend to drone on for me, but every now and again he pulls out a melodic masterpiece. 3- I like Vai's sound and I commend him for experimenting with different styles and effects, but in the end most of his work lacks the melody I desire, and the goofy vocal samples he uses sometimes...like in 'Little Green Men'...nah, no thanks. |
