Yeah they're often credited as grunge, I hate to call them that though because they're so much better than that. I just refer to them as alternative something. For a band that started off in Hardcore Punk ( I mean lets be honest, Crover wipes the floor with Grohl), moved on over to a sound very similar to Crust Punk, has done sounds that some band like something Electric Wizard would be proud of, made some very grungey music, dabbled in stoner and now they're at a fairly Punk Metal stage with (a) Senile Animal. Grunge wishes it could have the Melvins.

They have that sludgy type of sound that can be considered grunge....I know of a couple of bands that sound like The Melvins and are considered grunge, a couple of my friends refer to them as a stoner rock band.

Gluey Porch Treatments is my favourite Melvins album, but probably not the best starting point.

Go for Stoner Witch or Houdini. The new one is pretty good too.

I really like Bullhead. It's sludgy and heavy. Houdini is their best "diverse" album.

Gluey Porch Treatments is like one big sludgy, grimy collection of music that crawls along as one continuous piece, rather than an album of seperate songs. It's awesome.

The last song on Houdini is a waste of 10 minutes, but the rest is great.
