Rush was Progressive Rock starting with the release of 2112, and their last album that could be considered Prog would likely be either Grace Under Pressure or Power Windows. Their late 80s and early 90s material didn't contain very many Progressive elements. I haven't heard their 3 most recent albums. I'm not sure how anyone could say Hemispheres isn't Progressive Rock.

my boss asked one of my officemates to get this "metal guy James Durbin" on the phone (or his manager).

I thought he's belongs to one of those metal bands i don't know about. so my officemate went to google and searched for James Durbin and we found this...

PoolGuy 07-20-2011 11:50 AM

does anyone play metal on an acoustic guitar

blastingas10 10-23-2011 04:08 AM

Wow. I had no idea there were so many sub genres. Seems a bit excessive and unnecessary.

It's excessive, but not unnecessary. Once you become familiar with all the metal subgenres, they're an easy way tell what they sound like.

rockcrunchblog 04-13-2012 08:24 AM

wow!! nice articles there!! thnk you for the enlightment!

rockcrunchblog 04-14-2012 04:11 AM

Metal has a very wide range of sounds from doom to thrash to death to black to pirate.
Yes pirate metal does exist!!

warrior of metal 04-17-2012 11:50 AM

The band Anal **** are also hilarious!

No I'm sorry, it's power metal but with lyrics of swords and sorcery swapped out for ships and wenches. If we start allowing genres to be born out of lyrics rather than musical stylings then our daughters will all be shagging communists by this time next year.

warrior of metal 04-17-2012 12:00 PM

It exists. Listen to Alestorm, Verbal Deception and Wheels of Poseidon, they all sound different but are all pirate metal!

LoathsomePete 04-17-2012 12:09 PM

I don't deny its existence, I just deny its claim to be its own subgenre when all what it is is dressed up power metal, much like how H.I.M. calls itself "Love Metal" when all what it is is gothic rock/ alternative metal, or at least it was in 2003 when I cared about them.

Dark Rebel 09-06-2012 01:58 PM

Educate me on what the word Modern has to do with Rock/Metal. I have no idea what people are talking about when they mention Modern Rock/Metal.

Moving Entombed from Melodic Death to regular death metal and putting Carcass instead.

Removing Iron Maiden from Power Metal and putting Helloween in there instead.

Perhaps adding NWOBHM and Grindcore genres to the post.

Agree with all but don't remove Iron Maiden.

I thought Revolver was the first psychedelic rock album, not Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band?

It's one of the first but it was pre-dated by both Frank Zappa's Freak Out! and Byrds Fifth Dimension.

Isbjørn 04-22-2013 10:09 AM

Then why does this thread say Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band?

What thread where? Guess what the Beatles didn't start every genre.

Isbjørn 04-23-2013 08:04 AM

From the rock section:

Psychedelic Rock

Psychedelic refers to the experience the mind has when in an almost subliminal state. The boundaries of this genre are not clearly defined and spill into Stoner Rock, Acid Rock, and Progressive Rock among others. The aim is to create trippy pieces of music using vocals that either flitter or are of a low rumble. The bass is usually quite prominent to create a heavy, sedated feel and the guitar riffs are very distorted and either very jumpy or smooth and paralysing. The Beatles Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is the first recognised album to incorporate psychedelic features. Bands from all over the rock world can fit into this genre.

Ok but the previous examples that I stated, actually pre-dated that Beatles album.

WOW, I just got a blow job from Bar Refaeli and you don't see me bragging about it.

Isbjørn 05-12-2013 04:36 AM

Does Marilyn Manson count as gothic rock? Isn't he leaning more towards industrial?

Why bother posting in a metal recommendations thread then? The last part of what you've written makes no sense either.

Isbjørn 07-22-2013 01:30 PM

I'm missing a part in the metal section that sums up the characteristics of traditional heavy metal, or a better description of it. I think it should have its own part in the post, with band examples and everything.

Isbjørn 08-12-2013 01:12 PM

The metal post really bugs me - what is sludge rock, and how is it the same as doom? Also, it says that power metal started in 1975, when Iron Maiden formed. Iron Maiden released their debut EP in 1979, and it didn't really sound like what the band would later become.

Slothinator 09-16-2013 05:12 PM

In what way is this "education"?

I'd throw the acid away. Or buy some more.

Wpnfire 01-25-2014 12:04 PM

Surf Rock is a major area left out of this list. Dick Dale's "Miserlou" and a ton of Beach Boys songs are what I would argue are surf rock.

crukster 01-04-2015 09:20 AM

So you would say you can put Metal in the all-encompassing Progressive genre as far end Rock umbrella terms?

The Batlord 01-23-2015 09:45 AM

I think you stole your name from an Auschwitz tattoo.

MasterBaggins 09-01-2015 11:40 AM

Why. Why did King crimson and Jethro Tull have to hide from me for so long.
Also, Zappa will be joining my collection in a few months.

And is progressive/technical metal any good? Must research.
