Tool is boring. Listen to better "progressive" rock please.
Tool may have a consistant sound they rarely changes, but it is a progressive sound in my opinion. And they do have their own unique sound. Unlike say Dream Theater, who simply just took every trick in the 70s prog book and recycled it for metalheads.

Anyway I love early NIN. The Downward Spiral is one of my favorite 90s albums.

That makes no sense to me, how is something progressive if you keep playing it over and over? If anything thats the opposite of progression.

You like Modest Mouse.

Tool do experiment, but in a way that dosen't alienate their fans or is a rapid departure from their trademark sound.

It's not like prog bands are supposed to have a completely different sound every album they make, a lot of them had their own trademark sounds, they simply expanded on the complexity of their sound as they matured musically. And thats what Tool do.

I'd love to take your posts more seriously , I really would but adding this is virtually every thread regardless of what band it's about just makes you look like an idiot.

I think th reason most people here who are not too into NIN is because you view them (actually its really just a him...Trent Reznor) as a metal/industrial fusion. But honestly you need to be more of a pure Industrial fan to appreciate them the most. Same thing with Front Line Assembly......their Millenium album saw infusions of some classic metal riffs from the likes of Pantera. But the thing is, outside of this album, they rarely use guitars....they came from hardcore industrial routes, and thats where they still remain.

I think Trent Reznor is a talented musician, but I understand why his music is not for everyone (and same goes for Tool.)

I think the latest album YEAR ZERO is very good. For some strange reason TOOL have completely bypassed me, I don't think i have consciously ever heard a track!

A band like NIN seem to divide opinion, but MINISTRY who were around just a little earlier seem to be immune from criticism. Maybe it's because NIN have had good commercial success and Reznor is poster friendly? I'm not saying this is the only reason, but when a modicum of success is achieved, it is easier to shoot them down.

Of course, you may genuinely not like their music, but MINISTRY are similar and have made just as many duff tracks, yet are not discussed. A link with MINISTRY may seem a tenuous link, but I believe that commercial success is both a blessing and curse.

I think NIN are an influential band, and have never sold out.

Well I much prefer Ministry to NIN and there are plenty of reasons why.

I can see where you are coming from with the NIN more popular thing but in my case when I first heard of both bands it was Ministry who were the bigger band. They were getting loads of media attention from the release of Psalm 69 and going down a storm every night on the Lollapalooza tour. In comparison NIN had released Petty Hate Machine to seeming indifference & you were lucky if you saw Head Like A Hole get a couple of plays on late night music TV.
The main thing I prefer about Ministry is that they seem more multi layered than NIN. My biggest problem with NIN is that I don't see much difference in the material. It just seems to be one self pitying industrial type whine after another. It's just too po faced & stoic for me to muster any enthusiam to listen to it.I remember the first time I heard The Downward Spiral. I fell asleep halfway through I was so bored.
In comparison I find Ministry to have a lot of humour in their work , one minute they can make some bone crushingly brutal political statement , the next they'll make some nonsense song like Jesus Built My Hot Rod. Stuff like that breaks up the album & gives it a bit of variety.
Added to that Ministry also use a lot of people like Gibby Hayes , Chris Connolly , Jello Biafra , Martin Atkins and to come in & keep things fresh & give things a bit more variety.
That's not to say they're perfect. I hated Filth Pig so much I don't think i've listened to anything they've made since.
But I would always choose Ministry over NIN.
