I'd have to name more than one:
Mike Inez Flea Rex Brown Les Claypool |
best bassists?
-les claypool (him and mike portnoy are an unstoppable force together) -flea (red hot chili peppers) -paul d'amour (tool) -justin chancellor (tool) -frank cavanagh (filter) |

yeah some don't like them.. I don't get it. Their music is so original and it can't do anything but make you think about things and make you feel good (to me at least). Maynards voice is really cool, something beyond what other singers have. Too bad Paul is not part of Tool anymore. He was cool, but Justin is pretty good also. Adam doesn't play bass, but he's a kick-ass guitarist.

of course I know the lyrics.. I know them by heart.... it's not all bad :P those lyrics make me smile though. Maybe I'm just weird, but hey.. whats so bad about that?
Flea (RHCP)
Nikki Sixx (Motley Creu) Sid Vitious (Sex Pistols) |
The best bassist has to be the guy from Rage Against the Machine!! :ar_15s:
i think John Paul Jones from led zeppelin has to be the greatest, either him, Pete Enthwistle or Flea.....but JPJ steals it for me!
noone mentioned Geddy Lee from Rush? one of the best i think, and Sid Vicious??? Come on now, he could barely hold the bass let alone play it.
it has to be Les Claypool he kicks ass hes the bass player i've ever heard Flea, Cliff Burton and Gezzer Butler are up there with the best too
Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam)
Flea (RCHP) Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden) |
Mark King and Flea
Nikki Sixx , Nikki Sixx!!!!!

come on now no one mentioned lemmy from motorhead its gotta be a crime
Alot of good bassists out there, But I'm suprised no one has mentioned Stu Hamm who plays with Satriani a great deal. (The Solo for G3 is unreal) or Jaco P.
Billy Sheene, and most anyone who's played on the Sharpnal Lable can play circles around some of the guys up already. Les is great, flea is very good, but guys like Gio form toast machine can play thier stuff note for note. What I'm trying to say, is they are not the only people who are skilled on the BASS! |
Umm...GEDDY LEE!
camron undy, ray brown, charles mingus,
rock bass does not stand up to jazz bass at all - my favourite rock bassists would be john entwistle and john paul jones |
Ok im a huge Led Zeppelin fan and love john paul jones...but geddy lee was just more original

Anyway, if dont you include all the classic Motown bassists like James Jamerson(who would own the list if you did.)the list would go something like this IMO.
1.Flea 2.John Entwhistle 3.Larry Graham 4.Geddy Lee 5.Les Claypool 6.Chris Squire...I can't believe he hasn't been mentioned already. :( 7.Jack Bruce 8.Bootsy Collins 9.Tony Levin 10.Cliff Burton 11.John Paul Jones 12.Paul Maccartney 13.Phil Lesh 14.Geezer Butler 15.Greg Lake 16.Stu Hamm 17.Jack Casady 18.Steve Harris 19.John Myung 20.Billy Sheenan Honorable mentions to John Wetton, John Deacon, Mike Gordan, Oteil Burbridge, Billy Cox, Mike Watt, Mike Rutherford, Dirk Lance, Roger Waters, Trevor Bolder, Krist Novoselic...I might have commited bass sacrilage with that last one. :) |
Haha maybe. So much for picking the best. That was a boo boo
anyone wondering who is the greatest bassist of all time should just listen to primus's "fish on" I'll describe it as a bass epic.
what about Willie Dixon, who Led Zeppelin, Cream and the Doors totally ripped off
Jaco Pastorius.

Every time they ask this question, people clamor to be the first to write Vooten or Pastorious. Tonight I will pray that all of you get hit in the face with the sharp end of a rake.
Sting or Paul McCartney. |

Though i would put Sting and Novoselic in the same catagory, 2 bassists who from a technical standpoint were not impressive at all and were average at best, but nonetheless they were very creative and made some great lines, neither are really top 50 though, i only mentioned Novoselic because i know that no one else will, i think people dont cut him enough slack, but yeah, i expect to get a lot of flaming for that, not that i care. |
Peter Hook and Kim Deal, they've done some of my favorite baselines.
