I like Roger Waters. Though I don't venture into bassists enough to pick a best.

Jaco Pastorius for crazy playing ability.
Victor Wooten for actually making it sing!

Because the bassline is vital for any song. The bass playing underpins the harmony and rhythm. Mostly its something that you don't even notice - great bass playing can be overlooked but if its not there then the song won't sound anywhere near as good. At the same time, bad bass playing (like bad rhythm guitar playing) can ruin a song without you even realising.

What I mean is that you realise the song is bad, but often can't quite describe why. If so, it might just be crappy bass (or guitar) playing.

I agree with part of what you said, but it depends on what you consider bad bass playing, most people i know consider Noel Redding a bad bass player, but i have never actualy heard him ruin a Jimi Hendrix song(in the studio anyway), and i own all of Hendrix's studio work with him, hes not a very technical bassist, but he got the job done.

I wouldn't call that bad bass playing then. If he's not very technically advanced, that's one thing, but I've heard a LOT of very fast, hap-slappy bassists who sound great playing alone but ruin the music when they play in a band.

Selfish or lazy bass playing is bad bass playing. If you're only able to play one note per bar then its ok as long as you make it the right note, at the right point.

Sid Vicious is the poster child for horrible bass playing then.

Well I agree. His contribution to posters was probably better than his contribution to music (however much of an icon he may be).
