I bought Slippery When Wet a couple of weeks ago despite not having listening to it for over 15 years but it was one of the first albums I owned when I got into Rock and Metal in the mid 80's but it doesn't hold up well at all for me despite a couple of tracks. However I may well give 7800 Fahrenheit a listen sometime as I remember that being a little harder and rougher around the edges.

A few examples of tracks off "The Circle", the last Bon Jovi album, in case anyone hasn't heard anything recent from the guys.

The same thought crossed my mind as a matter of fact, I'm tempted to say I agree with this. Other than generally sounding rougher, the album was a commercial failure, which doesn't at all surprise me because it's not really as commercial as any of their other albums. Personally I'm quite fond of it, here's an old favourite to get started:

EDIT FOR TH:

Turns out I'm able to get on MB, thought it would be longer!

Maybe I'm not who you're addressing with this comment since they don't really "get up my nose", but I think what some people have against them is how bland they are. They're not horrible—they do have a handful of songs I like, mostly for nostalgic reasons—but they don't exactly do anything that's particularly interesting. I'm honestly amazed that they've continued to be so successful for as long as they have since, to me, there's really nothing that sets them apart from other 80s hard rock bands.

Same here. Don't get me wrong, they're tons of fun when I'm in the mood, but I always figured they were for girls what Motley Crue were for dudes.

Not getting at you, Janz, or His Lordship either. Just the general hatred/contempt for them surprises me, when there are so many other bands who could be seen in the same light. See I'm different to you guys in that respect: I don't look for a band to be ever-evolving, challenging, changing. When I find a band I like I prefer them to stay doing what I like. If that makes them (or me) boring then fine, but I still think Bon Jovi make some great music, have had some classics and continue to write excellent songs.

And that, really, is all I ask from a band whose music I enjoy and collect.

I haven't really observed any more hatred or contempt directed at Bon Jovi than at any other similar band. Of course I happen to live in the Bon Jovi Zone so maybe the people around me have a more favorable opinion of them than in other areas.

I don't necessarily look for a band to be ever-evolving, challenging or changing either. The issue with Bon Jovi (and Poison, Def Leppard, etc.) is that they were never very exciting in the first place.

I'm probably the guy this should be directed at. I loathe Bon Jovi. I find them very generic, but as stated most hair bands of the day were using the same formulas. I even like Def Leppard which suffers from the same stale approach. Granted On through the night, High n Dry and Pyromania were all masterpieces of hair spray metal . My girlfriend loves Bon Jovi, so i've heard it all, it just doesn't register with me in the slightest. Yeah my girlfriend has terrible taste in music. Joking Troll, rock on with your New Jersey hairspray metal.

I still like them. I think they got better with age. (Like me.HA!)
The four songs I have on my mp3 Blaze of Glory, Its My Life, Have A Nice Day, and Keep The Faith.

"Silent Night" from 7800 Fahrenheit also is good.

I think some factors that have allowed Bon Jovi to outlast other hair metal bands are
1) the solid songwriting
2) the 1.5 vocalists set-up
3) the great keyboard work of David Bryan
4) the contrasting, yet attractive looks of JBJ and Sambora
5) the (I don't know why JBJ likes it) country twinge of the music that started creeping in circa 1986

By the way, the country flavor is why I don't particularly like Bon Jovi after the mid-90's. Bryan's role was reduced.
