This may not interest many people here but i love it so much i thought id make a thread anyway.

two of doom-drone music's leading bands, Sunn O))) and Boris, have teamed to up to record an album TOGETHER. yup... this is not a split, its a full-on collaboration, and it is IMO both band's best work to date.

I managed to get hold of the limited bonus version which includes and extra CD of a 23min epic collaboration of both bands, plus Doom-giants Earth. Not only is this one of the best albums of the year, i think it will become a defining album of the genre.

This album has amazingly heavy walls of sound.

I don't know what else to say about it except it's some huge drone.

That's because you don't listen to good music.

The concept behind what they do is extraordinary. Sunn O))) defines bleak, dark, depressing, painful music. And it's all so beautiful

Ethan sent me some Sun O))) a while ago, and I really don't understand the appeal. In my opinion, it seems quite pretentious?

of COURSE theres a pretentious element to it, like alot of experimental music... the whole idea behind it is to use music and ideas that have never been used before.

But who cares? if you're as innovative as Sunn O))) & Boris (and although its hard to tell on record, these guys are very talented) then you're allowed to be pretentious IMO!

The appeal is the atmosphere.. the fact that this music can make you feel like your floating in space and trapped inside a dark vibrating box at the same time.

Haha I see what you mean, but I don't see how they can be talanted, based on what I have heard.

I have heard that the atmosphere is good when you go to see them live.

well that all depends on the definition of music. id say 'music' is anything you enjoy listening to... which, for me, is this album. Wikipedia agrees.

I got that one Boris album in the email upload thing. It kinda just confused me, it did not make sense at all; its deleated now. I assume Sunn O))) is simmilar to this as well?

it depends which boris album... they're a bit more varied than Sunn O))). The collaboration isn't really typical of either though.

Boris's album Pink is at the opposite end of the spectrum compared to this collab, Muzak. Way, way more energetic. I actually rate Pink as one of the most all out assaults I've ever heard.

I read your post and realized that I prompted a reaction because I made an ignorant post. So I have been listening to some Sunn O))) whilst doing some other things and it is decent background music, it is nothing I would listen to in my car however I would put it on in the house. So I have taken responsibility for my ignorant post, perhaps you could do the same :)

Sunn is definitly not car music. It's take a rip, and mellow out while having the greatest mind**** of all time.

I`ve got stuff downloaded by both bands but I never got around to checking either out.

I can't imagine it being your sort of thing Urban. Well in terms of the collaboration anyway. And I get the feeling that if one of the bands was going to appeal to you it would be Boris. What were the albums you picked up?

I got the Boris album that was in the sharing email a while ago.
You're right I do like it in a kind of Hawkwind at their most brutal type way.
