You can rarely top Jazz in the technical department.
In terms of rock bands, excluding all the ones I don't care to remember, The Mahavishna Orchestra is pure pwnage. |

Besides, I'd say Paganini pwns Bach in the technical department. And listen up metallica fans, Metallica IS NOT THAT TECHNICAL... In this category it's not even close. |

Anyway, bands/artists that are worthy of being mentioned here.
Dragonforce, even though I dispise them. King Crimson, pretty much everyone who has ever been in the band is technical pwnage, except Boz Burrell, who only played on one Crimson album. Return To Forever. Weather Report. Bela Fleck And The Fleckstones. Dixie Dregs. Yes. Symphony X. Yngwie Malmsteen, no comment. Rush. Meshuggah. Deep Purple. Iron Maiden. Racer X. Shawn Lane. Miles Davis, duh. Colonal Claypools Bucket Of Bernie Brains... Great name huh? Jeff Beck. Steve Vai. Marty Fieldman. Terry Bozzio. Mr Bungle. Stu Hamm. P-Funk. Steve Morse Band. Billy Sheenan. Danny Carry. ELP. Michael Manring. Frank Zappa and everyone who has ever played with Frank Zappa at some point in time. Camel. Gong. Alan Holdsworth. Pat Metheny. Tony Levin Band. Genesis. Dream Theater, as downright horrible as their music is, even I the greatest DT hater of em all can admit that these guys have talent, even if they don't know how to use it. ...Am I forgetting anyone?... Oh yeah, an endless sea of prog, metal and fusion bands that I wont bother to name. |
