I just found his original article...

Quote:
What do people think about old rock music?
Is there space for it in todays charts??
All the new rock bands that are coming out now all have the same sound. Does anyone else agree? There are a few decent bands like the Kaiser Cheifs and Kasabian and they have a real sound but a lot of bands seem to have the same dum de dum de dum sound.

I missed Reading Festival (carling weekend) this year and I'm slightly annoyed because I missed out on seeing the Kaiser Cheifs and Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam are a good example of how old rock music can still be popular now. Is it going to be possible for old rock bands or even new rock bands with an old sound to make it big now?
I've been a fan of rock music all my life. I was brought up listening to bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and the Rolling Stones. There aren't any bands at the moment that really have some sort of break through sound. I feel like maybe they've run out of sounds. Run out of things to do.
A decent guitar solo is very rare now adays. The closest I heard reccently was The Darkness who although were very successful have sort of turned into a one hit wonder band. That one hit being there first album. But they were too cheesy for me. I know men in tight jeans and big hair is supposed to be cheesy but I miss the real rock ballads!!!

Does anyone else agree? Or is it just me.
Looks like my original assessment was spot on.

Jet steals their riffs from AC/DC. Neither band is very good. Ouch.

Rock music like punk, like hardcore, like Classical, was an era.

We're past that era. There is no innovation. I'm not saying that that is neccessarily a bad thing, but what made it exciting and fresh is common now.

So yes, Rock is dead. There are bands out there that emulate it, and that build off it, but they are no longer "rock n' roll" bands.

About the Darkness, weren't they just taking the piss a bit? I thought they were trying to be all glam rock as a joke?

EDIT: See what you mean rar, music changes over time and of course there are no bands like Led Zep now coz they are all in the past.

I don't think real rock is dead.
When you've got bands like Metallica every so often releasing a good album rock can't die. But I think Lynkrd Skynrd released an album within the last 3 years that wasn't too great. And they were pretty good back in their day. SO I guess it's about perspective.
And I will admit that I haven't heard too many new rocks bands that I actually liked.
So i guess talented rock bands just aren't emerging as frequently as we would like.
And good rock music in general (regardless of band) isn't emerging too often either.

So because you don't like them there isn't many talented rock bands? and I wouldn't call St. Anger something thats saving rock...

I didn't like the St. Anger album. And it's not saving rock music although I don't think it needs to be dead because I think it's still alive.
I was look for an example of rock music that was good.

And it's not really abuot whether a band is talented or not. It's about the music int he rock genre that's been coming out lately. Not necessarily from a particular band.
