From what I've heard so far, Marrow of the Spirit is shaping up to be a contender for album of the year. With great albums such as Disambiguation and Axioma Ethica Odini coming out this autumn, 2010 is shaping up to be a great year for metal.
I'm just hoping Agalloch's upcoming release is as good, if not better than AATG. The Post-Rock tendencies in Ashes really made that album special to me.

Heard it but I have to disagree with some of you - I thought it was sorta terrible in comparison to Ashes Against the Grain which grabbed me right away. I think that one feels a lot more organic and atmospheric. The new one has a lot more generic metal riffing and structure, or at least a lot more of it. It felt like I had heard it all before. A clean metal sound with lots of predictable chord progressions, and buildups with resolutions that you can hear coming from miles away.
I'd have to re-listen to both albums to really back up my statements but I was pretty disappointed by this. |

I love Agalloch but is there a challenger to their particular sound this year?
A one man outfit and only 4 tracks released thus far but this is some very good stuff right here.

No way Jackhammer. Agalloch all the way. There live dvd kicks some serious arse.
Although Gallowbraid has some definite cool stuff.
