NU-metal, Part of metal or not?

This arguement was brought up in another thread and I thought I'd make a poll on it, I personally think that it is, but it's just not a complete genre. Post your arguements

You know...coming from you that says alot. And, i'm not sure, nu-metal is used way loosely. I mean, some bands i've heard are just hard rock others are just rap rock.

Stone Magnet 08-04-2006 11:11 PM

I don't like it at all, but yes, it is metal.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-05-2006 01:20 AM

Yes it is

Just because it`s sh*t doesn`t mean you can disown it

Sound Devastation 08-05-2006 04:46 AM

I dont like nu-metal.... and i dont like metal either,

but the two are not the same. Nu-metal has characteristics of rock, and NONE of the characteristics of metal. and rapping/djing has is only a random influence and has nothing to do with it... rap-rock is something completely different, nu-metal is defined by low tuning, simple songs/riffs and teen angsty lyrics.

but everyone has different ideas fo where genre boundaries lie.

and im not going to vote, cause although its not part of metal, im not saying that because its crap.

TheBig3 08-05-2006 08:52 AM

You know I feel that nu-metal is the accidental genre that could. I mean people tend to forget exactly where rock music was when Korn crashed the gates, but their first album was pretty revolutionary. From a billion post-grunge crap emerged a band so diffrent, that connected with people so well they spawned a million instant style-theives. And thats pretty much how it became a genre in my mind. To this day there are only two real bands in nu-metal; System of a Down and Korn.

Everything else is a derivitive of those two in my opinion.

(I came back to this 20 mins later, If I have unfinished thoughts, thats why)

Slipknot = nu metal. They have metal parts. Most nu metal bands have metal parts if not all of them. What the hell are you even talking about haha?

Sound Devastation 08-05-2006 11:13 AM

im talking about structure, content and tuning - its far more alike rock than metal. of course theres influences from metal though, thats where the name comes from.

Stone Magnet 08-05-2006 11:32 AM

Quote:

structure
Rock songs and metal songs are generally structured the same way. Well, popular rock/metal anyway.

Quote:

tuning
Nu-Metal bands are known for downtuning/drop-tuning, which is something seen in metal more often than in rock.

Quote:

content
Lyrical content? You can't pin lyrical content down to a particular genre, save death/black metal (sometimes).

Quote:

of course theres influences from metal though
Most Nu-Metal bands are heavily influenced by metal bands - much more so than hip-hop or rock bands/artists.

Agreed.

tdoc210 08-05-2006 03:58 PM

Its really crap, but yes it's metal.

metaliger 08-05-2006 07:46 PM

Well depends on how you define Nu-Metal.... bands like Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, and System of a Down are usually refered to as Nu-Metal, but they hardly sound anything alike. Do you consider Nu-Metal rock music mixed in with rap vocals? A bunch of random growling/screaming noises? A lack of guitar solos and possibly "talent"? I'll say this, any band that utilizes heavy sounding guitar riffs and hard hitting drum beats in alot of their songs SHOULD be considered metal despite the fact if they suck or not.

tdoc210 08-05-2006 09:50 PM

Rage isnt Nu-metal :(.

I voted for them all because some nu metal is good but some isn't some nu metal is like metal but some isn't etc...

Muzak 09-19-2006 05:53 PM

I say it is but to an extent. Some bands are really just hard rock that claim to be Nu Metal while some are very Metal but aren't as good. Overall I voted yes it is.

Melkor 12-02-2006 06:10 AM

This is what Joey DeMaio of Manowar has said on the subject:

'True metal' is music that's true to the style of classic heavy metal. It's not diluted. It's not pussied out. It's not wimped out. It's played from the heart, 100 percent."

He's also said:

"We play Metal pure, you know. We don't play radio bull****. We don't suck ass''.

Eric Adams, Manowar Vocalist said:

"It's a shame that future musicians growing up now are being influenced by trash; it's really upsetting. You are basically formed by what your influences are and if you've got losers for influences, you're going to have a hard time overcoming that.''

See, these guys may be too 'extremist' when it comes to hating stuff, but they have a point. Nu-Metal might imitate the real thing, but it is not True Metal. Its a complete mockery of what Classic Metal really is.

Sound Devastation 12-02-2006 12:10 PM

and it has no elements of metal whatsoever.

crappy alt-rock riffs, pop structure and content, rock vocals...

ok they down-tune their guitars to make it sound a little heavy, but theres no trace of metal there.

Melkor 12-03-2006 05:13 AM

I also forgot to mention that if there's anything worse, its probably Rap-Metal/Rap-Rock.

Rap is such a ****ty form of music. Mixing it with Metal or Rock is like desecrating a holy place.

I`d take De La Soul , Public Enemy, KRS-1 and many many more over every single band you mentioned in the 'Any unknown rock bands?' thread

And i`m not even much of a hip hop fan either.

Melkor 12-03-2006 07:14 AM

^^Yeah, I am sure tried and tested bands like Symphony X and Stratovarius suck because you said so.

Dude, there's such a thing as individual taste. Its clear that you aren't into anything Power Metal (or Iron Maiden), so I suggest you dig up some good info. to back your opinions up before saying stuff.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-03-2006 07:22 AM

I didn`t say they suck I said I like those artists I mentioned more.

Rainard Jalen 12-03-2006 12:35 PM

Well, here's the thing: why is the screaming of Corey Taylor of Slipknot any LESS metal than the screaming of Tom Araya of Slayer?

I've heard very little Nu Metal music in which the vocals bore the slightest resemblance to that of hip-hop rappers. It doesn't strike me as a real fusion genre.

Guess I'll have to check them out, then. But OTHERWISE... by and large, in general I don't see much hip-hop influence in "Nu Metal" vocals.

sleepy jack 12-03-2006 04:46 PM

Linkin Park...Limp Bizkit...

[MERIT] 12-03-2006 05:32 PM

Do you guys think that POD would fall under "nu-metal"? (Sonny tends to rap a little on some tracks)
