Whether or not you like it, yes it is.

You're a complete idiot if you don't think Pantera was a thrash metal band. Sorry, but come on...

"Grunge" is hardly an actual genre. It was a label slapped on any rock/metal band that came out of Seattle at the time. The 'Big 4' Grunge bands sound nothing alike. Alice In Chains were a metal band. You don't have to sound like Cannibal Corpse to be a metal band. It's one of the more diverse genres out there.

1. I listened to all of Lateralus. Besides hating myself for doing so, I found no major similarities. It's like calling Pink Floyd a metal band for doing something different than their peers that had a "bass heavy" sound

2. No, it's not. It's a misapplied term. Nu-Metal is completely grounded in hip-hop. It's missing all the major metal components.

3. I'm biased, so I hesitate to give them the label. Older stuff yes. Later stuff no.

4. You must have missed the post where I said that metal isn't just DM and BM. I understand it's very diverse. But calling AIC a metal band is simply streching it too far. And grunge (in my mind) applied more to the mindset of the bands than their actual music much of the time. The rebelling against what was the dominate music pattern of the time, the lyrics dealing with personal loss and problems, and the riff oriented heavily distorted guitar all ran very similar. I'm not a big Grunge fan, but from my experiances with it and the more popular bands i hear very diffinitive similarities.

I think Devin Townsend wins. Why? Because he's THAT fucking awesome and seeing him with Strapping Young Lad at ozzfest was a highlight.

Obviously not.

What are these "major metal components"?

I break it down real simple for you

And I know there are some errors. I'm working on verison 2 currently.

Progressive music’s sound cannot really be pigeonholed due to the very nature of Progressive Music, however some factors remain constant. The musicianship is very high and often very complex. Most songs are very long with very few “parts” repeated. And often bands put out concept albums (albums unified by a central theme that runs throughout the record. Often songs will have a consistent riff or sound that anchors it together).
That proves that Tool is a progressive metal band.

Thrash metal combines the speed and intensity of punk and hardcore with the precision of metal.
All post-'Power Metal' Pantera = Thrash metal. Sometimes they're labelled as "Groove Metal", which also makes sense.

Not truly a metal sub-genre
It is a metal subgenre. Whether or not you like it, it is. Why do you think it's called "Nu-metal"? The vocals are sometimes influenced by hip-hop/rap, that's about it.

You failed to mention anything about Alternative Metal.

riseagainstrocks 08-04-2006 10:11 PM

As I said version 2 is on the way, it'll included, Alt, Tech, and Grind.

And Tool is progressive...ish.

and you're saying what i said about Pantera lol

it's called Nu-Metal cause some idiot attached the label. Everyone who liked ICP back in the day latched on.

High musicianship, complex music, epic songs, concept albums. According to you, they're the prototypical progressive metal band.

They were never "Southern Groove Rock".

It's called Nu-Metal because it's a subgenre of metal. Try to see past the bigotry.

1. All those things you mentioned are still subjective. Think it if you want. You're not wrong. But I'm not either.

2. hmmm, Thrash and Groove with a Southern flair to it...wow...should we include such a vital part of their sound in the style...

3. What race am I hating on? And Nu-Alternative is a much more appropriate title for "Nu-Metal"

If there's a way I could possibly mention something objective, let me know.

Groovy Thrash Metal? We'll settle on that. :-\

None - you don't have to be jeering a race to be a bigot.
