Pretty much my problem with them.
The album covers are nice , the videos are nice but when it comes down to it to me most of the songs are kinda like the same sludgy drone with bits added to it to make it a little different.

Well i think many of their songs are great, though i did confuse some of the songs off their new album as being among their older work.

I'm unaware of this "Tool Riff". None of their stuff seems overly similar to me but, I'm just a fanboy.

I have never heard Tool do anything remotely similar to something that would qualify as a riff, except maybe Parabola, and that's a very distinctive song.
And Urban, before you or someone else call Tool a technical wanky band like Dream Theater, it should be noted that Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor aren't very technical at all, they can play in odd time signatures and make creative use of their instruments, but they don't do fancy neo classical shredding kind of stuff or anything remotely close to that... In fact most of Tool's guitar and bass solos (when there are any, which is rare) are very brief and simple in comparison to the whole structure of the song, when Jones or Chancellor do solo, it almost always fits the song... And the only truly technical member of the group is their drummer, Danny Carey. Tool's music is more about the intensity and build up than anything else, they do use complex structures, but so do Radiohead, and they are by no means virtuosos.... In short, complexity dosen't always equal amazing technical skill. |

Yes I completely understand how the songs Third Eye, Lateralis, Schism, Reflection, Flood, Opiate, 10,000 Days, Disposition and Jerk Off are all the same song with a few bits and pieces on the side. God I've heard some dumb shit before but that takes the cake. It would be easier to say "they're just not my thing" than to make up some uneducated bulshit to support ones bias. Actually when I think about it, the same reasoning could be used for almost any band ever.

Urban Hatemonger. I just think it's unfair to critisize the band on that reasoning when every band has their own underlying sound with a few extra bits added. Thats what makes a band.
To me, all that said was, "I dislike this band because they have their own sound" He could of just said they're not his thing, and left it at that honest point.

His reasoning for disliking Tool is similar to his statements about Pearl Jam, U2 and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
He seems to mostly prefer more pop/rock n roll oriented bands in the mold of David Bowie, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones... But that's only my observation, the guy might be a Napalm Death fan for all i know. And Merkaba, not all bands fit that discription, The Beatles tend to change it up song from song. |

Yeah I'd actually meant to put 'almost all', which I did in my original post but somehow not my second, because Fantomas and Mr Bungle are all over the place. And yeah, the Beatles...
