i say take away his solos (the only unique element to his style) and you tell me to check out a solo. i say his solos are out of place in his songs (as in there's a dedicated gap in the flow of the song for bzzt reee bzzzt ree brrrrpppp reee dooooop x4) and you resort to bad spelling. his solo for guitar hero 3 was pretty cool it worked in that context. on the other hand, changing a groove midway through a song for no other reason than forcing one of his solos into a generic radio rock tune IS cheesy. i imply that if you take away his effect pedals and give him an acoustic that he ceases to be unique and you infer that it's the making of a great guitarist. i don't see how being reliant on something other than a guitar makes someone a great guitarist. yeah you definitely told me... |

Either way your reasoning is bad. OH NOES THEY JUST DID A DRASTIC TIME CHANGE THIS IS BAD. Obviously not a prog fan. Quote:
And Hendrix made a big use out the wammey bar and techniques that really only work on electric, so he probably wouldn't be as great on accoustic either. For the most part electric and accoustic guitar are two very different instruments with different purposes. Besides, I'm assuming you didn't know this but Tom Morello actually has a folk music career under the stage name The Nightwatchman. His acoustic playing is actually pretty good. Quote:

His acoustic playing might be good but his folk playing skills are laughable judging by the 3 songs I heard him play live.

I specifically mean his guitar playing. I sure as hell wont defend his singing.

Thanks for that, I honestly wasn't aware of him having any acoustic stuff. I've only heard his stuff from Montery Pop, Woodstock, Band of Gypsies and some other live rock stuff. I think I'll take Urbans advice about that disc set, if I can find it.

And the fact that a band greatly appeals to a particular demographic doesn't mean that they intended to make their music for that particular dmeographic. I don't see how that kind of "do what I'm telling you to do" message makes them contrived... it just means they have strong opinions. I can see how it might be annoying though.

Hell, every political speaker/protestor wants you to do what they tell you, no matter what "side" they are on.

Exactly - that's why I see no problem with it. I certainly don't think it makes them contrived. And that is also the very thing which alienates certain fans who like the musical component but really can't tolerate the message.

boo boo... how many time have you listened to ANATO today?
As far as Morello depending on effects to get his point across, so what... that's what the music calls for. I don't wanna hear acoustic guitar in a Rage song, so his ability on an acoustic means nothing to me. |

Lyrics are not a make a break for me, if I like a bands lyrics (and in this case I do like RATMs lyrics but I wont defend it as being anything special) then thats great, that makes me like the band a little more.
But if the lyrics are bad and the music is still great then I could care less. I love Van Halen and Guns N Roses and I think thats all that needs to be said. Though as a proggie I also love ELP. A band who has written lyrics such as "Can you believe, God makes you breathe. Why did he lose six million Jews." |
