They're as good as mainstream rock gets imo but, that doesnt say too much.

Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Radiohead, etc... are (or were) all mainstream

Their early material is very strange, very few songs of the verse/chorus/verse type, and time sigs that are all over the place... Dosen't sound like 4/4 three minute pop to me...

I'm not comparing soad to all time. I was comparing them to modern mainstream, which I'm very unimpressed with. Soad doesnt even compare with most of those bands. And, if we are talking about all time I void what I said.
