Prison Song is okay. But the lyrics are like they are straight out of a high school class project. Awful and cliche. Actually, their political songs all seem this way. I prefer their more goofy songs, rather than their Rage Against the Machine for idiots approach to politics. I mean, I am no expert on politics myself, I am not going to say I could write anything groundbreaking in that regard.. but I can still tell when it is bad... and that is bad.
I mean, 99% of the time Serj tries to go for these "oh, I am so abstract and oh so weird" type lyrics, that just usually come across as juvenile stupidity. Plus, letting Darren near the mic should be a punishable by death act. To me, the phone went away after the first album, and then it became a case of taking themselves too seriously... even though they try to hide it behind the cooky stuff.

@Bastard of young
i agree on some points you made but disagree on others, it's true they don't show alot of depth in the message in their political songs but then again it would suck if they did cause there is nothing fun about that so they use it more as a rebel yell than anything, political punk bands do that too, a political message alone without music is not entertaining and if you're into politics for real you're not gonna take your cues from a band like SOAD Also i like Daron's voice and his style of guitar playing, Serj's voice is more deep and operatic but Daron's voice is more sensitive and feminine.. Maybe it's me but in the song Kill Rock n roll to me he sounds a bit like Kim gordon Daron's voice alone doesn't sound feminine but in contrast with Serj's voice it does, it's also more unrefined than his.. i really like SOAD for their music arrangements, The drums and the guitar are always playing with different tempos and they are loud and in your face..

@BlackFrancis you remind me of how I've started to think of SOAD as sort of this band that's both hardcore alternative metal and a highly experimental grunge band, sort of like In Utero-era Nirvana plus metal, sort of.
In fact, SOAD was clearly influenced by the sound of Nirvana and by extension the Pixies. That low-high volume trademark of the Pixies that Cobain used profusely was also used extensively by SOAD, and you can hear it in songs like Shimmy, Chop Suey!, Forest and especially in Toxicity. Come to think of it! Toxicity uses a very VERY similar song structure to Smells Like Teen Spirit. Like, it's almost exactly the same! |
