I'm really getting into stuff like Jethro Tull and Van Der Graaf Generator at the moment but I've gone for the present in the poll. There's loads of goodness in the past but the bands of today have got all of that music from the past to inspire them and they've got technology on their side.

P.S. Reddie, fix your location lol you're perpetuating stereotypes with that sort of thing, it's like you're asking others if you live in Canada. wtf, are you from the prairies or are you a newfie? :P

The birth of hip / hop
The birth of independent labels
Electronica coming of age.
Post Punk & New Wave
Not to mention the huge rise in popularity of metal , which was all but dead around 77/78

All the best aspects of the 80s happened away from the mainstream.

Only the independent label thing counts.

Besides, why do you act like that is a good thing when people constanly bitch about it here?

So hip hop , electronica , metal & post punk don't count?

And I don't think i've ever bitched about independent labels putting out music by bands that wouldn't normally be heard.

Those genres have stagnated beyond repair.

And I was referring to others, not you.

That's a bit like saying you won't buy a Joy Division album from 1980 because Interpol released a sh*ty album in 2007.

Your loss I spose
