Alternative rock is extremely broad, it's a pretty rubbish term really. Like in the favourite styles of rock thread going on at the moment, Alternative is basically acting as the equivalent of 'Other'.

Alternative sections in the music stores over here include everything from U2 to Fu Manchu to Iron Maiden.
